Buying a sofa
Buying a sofa used to be so much simpler. You'd drive to Carle Place one day and check out Seaman's, Levitz, Fortunoff, Huffman Koos, Macy's, Domain, Raymour, the Place, Ashley, Bombay... Boom. Done.
Now, hardly anything is left. If you don't like anything at Raymour, Ashley, Macy's, or Bob's (which has the same styles of the other 3), then what do you do? We've gone to each of those several times already, changing what we're looking for every time, but just can't find anything. Maybe we're too picky? We definitely don't want chocolate brown - it doesn't go with the scheme of the LR - and that color seems to be most popular together lately so that really limits what we can get.
Sorry, I guess I'm just whining - there used to be so many more places to buy furniture and one by one they've all gone out of business. It's so frustrating!

Did you try Thomasville? I am supposed to go couch shopping as well today haha. If i see anything i will let you know. Are you looking for something that is formal or casual? What color are you looking for?

Thanks, we did try Thomasville but found it difficult. They have like 10 models of couches and hundreds of fabrics and you get to pick the style you want with the color you want.
Call me crazy, but I hate that! I just don't have the imagination. I need to see what a couch is going to look like and sit on it to see if I like it.
Plus, they're about twice as expensive. Now you get what you pay for - and Thomasville has better stuff - but I'm hoping we have babies soon to potentially spit up and crayon all over it (heehee  ) so I don't want to spend upwards of $2000 on a sofa right now.

Thanks - I've been to The Place, Raymour's clearance center (which is not actually Raymour stuff but just cheaper stuff. False advertising!), and the bigger chains.
Does anyone have experience with any of the smaller non-chain stores? I've heard horror stories about some of the smaller stores and am afraid to just walk into one and buy something at a place I don't know. I'd appreciate it if someone could recommend a new, good place to me. I need new places to shop!

My mom got her new den sofa and love seat at Peter Andrews in Farmingdale. Have you looked there?
Also, you can try JC penney - my sister ordered furniture from them online and is happy with it. The also have a sale going on instore (for furniture and mattresses) and there is a 20% coupon on their site.

There's a Bassett on Rt. 110 (between Southern State and Rt. 109) and I think they're having a sale this weekend.
There's also a place called Albert's Furniture (near Raymour) that is going out of business. Never bought anything there but it might be worth a look.
Out of the Box on Sunrise Hwy in Islip (I think it's Islip - it's just west of where the Southern State meets Sunrise Hwy) has some nice furniture.

Thank you for the ideas! I really want living room furniture before Thanksgiving, so I'm driving myself a little crazy with all this. I'll take your suggestions and follow up if I find anything!

Not sure if they still exist but we got our couch at Phillip Engle. 5 years later and they are still holding up nicely.

what about Ikea? Their Ektorp sofa is similar to what you posted in your inspiration pick...
Also - I saw an AWESOME corduroy couch at Macy's in Lake Grove. I'm so buying it for our basement when we finish it. They have other sectionals too, along with JCP.

Jenn - I saw that corduroy sofa at Macy's today too! I had overlooked it the first time because it was a denim blue, but it also comes in "sand" and the price is great... I don't know how into corduroy DH is, but after all this furniture shopping I think he's juuuuuuust about ready to throw in the towel and stay home and watch football and let me buy the sofas.  .
As for the IKEA, comfort is really #1 for me (I like to nap in front of the tv a lot) so their couches are out. Not cushy enough. I need, like, a bed with two pillowy armrests.
Thank you, and everyone else for your suggestions.
I fell IN LOVE with a sofa at Peter Andrews today, which was of course twice the price of every other sofa in the store. Plus it's made custom and would take 2-3 months to deliver, and I wouldn't have it for the holidays. Oh well. I think we'll just settle for something comfy and neutral, and decorate around them to make the room the way I want it. Thanks again.

Oops, I should have updated: I bought a sofa at Macy's this afternoon! It was the one Jenn627 mentioned above - sand-colored corduroy. It's kind of "fun" and modern, and really comfy at the same time. I'd overlooked it on my first few trips because it's a denim-colored blue on display at the store, but I saw yesterday that it comes in "sand." I brought DH to see it today and he loved it so we got it.
After 6 months in our house, we'll finally be able to ditch the patio furniture in the living room!

I know you went to raymour but did you know that some of the couches can be made in different fabrics/colors? the couch we got (we liked it as it was displayed) but we could have choosen from a lot of different fabrics.

jennifer convertibles
