Anyone familiar with Massapequa?

We are looking at an apt. in Massapequa, on Carman Mill Rd. between Sunrise Hwy and E. Merrick Rd. It is a few houses down from the Massapequa Middle School, across from the South Point apartment complex. Is this a nice area of Massapequa? It's Massapequa schools but I'm concerned about it's proximity to Amityville. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

its an ok area. i wouldn't take it if i had kids in school, but if its not a permanent situation its fine.

You should be fine overall. I live in nearby Amity Harbor and have not had any problems. Also have had clients in the South Point complex and have never heard of any problems.

Carman's Rd. is a "main" Rd however so you may notice lots and lots of traffic, both cars and foot traffic as well, especially with the middle school, so if that will be an issue, I'd turn down this apartment.

There's also a motel on the corner of Carman's Rd. that I wonder if they put up homeless people in? Anyone know? It does seem a little "sketchy" right near the light there.

i agree w pp. youre going to see A LOT of kids walking and hanging around, lots of buses, lots of cars. being on any major road right by a middle school can be kinda hectic.. jmo

The apartment is sooooo nice, I guess it's too good to be true! DH and I took a ride out there and just drove around the neighborhood today and it didn't really look like an area we'd want to live in. Oh well...the search continues, I guess. Thanks for your feedback!

I was just about to come on and reply that I work in the area and I wouldn't want to live in the section you described.

As a heads up since you're looking in the area, there's an area technically called "East Massapequa" that has a Massapequa mailing address and is listed on MLS as "Massapequa," but kids there go to Amityville schools. If you see an apartment listed as being in "Massapequa" but the price seems much lower than you'd expect, it's probably because it's there. The area you mentioned is just across Sunrise highway from there, I think still in the Mass. school district but right in the middle of the mall and some very busy shopping centers.

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time finding a place. Have you looked in Farmingdale? It's a huge town and most of it is nice, and there should be a good amount of rentals (as compared to Massapequa and the other towns along Sunrise). Good luck!

I stayed with a friend who lived over there. I don't reccommend it.

I know where this is and it's not the pretiest area. The issue isnt that its close to Amityville b/c most of Amity south of sunrise is really an ok area (not schoolwise though). I didnt even think that area was Massapequa schools. There are areas with a Massapequa address that go to Amityville. Massapequa is SD #23- that's the one you want.

my girlfriend lived over there for a while- and another friend currently lives in the apartments....

honestly- it's a fine area- but I'd be more concerned being on a main "cut through" and dealing w/ all the kids..

in terms of being close to amityville- Amityville is a great town- actually south of the "tracks" more well-to-do than Massapequa and much more "snobby".. it's just a small town and not advertised as the people like to keep it on the down low...

it bothers me when people talk down about amityville- most people have never even set foot in the town...

I wouldn't consider that area.

Have you considered Bethpage? Really central and nice. Especially north of Stewart Ave.

I lived in the Southpointe Apts for a while. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend the area if I had children. First, there's a sketchy motel on the corner.

Second, I didn't have kids when I lived there but I believe some of my neighbors complained because they were actually in the Amityville SD not the Massapequa SD.
