What do I need to do before we close

Call LIPA? Water co? We have Gas so do we need a "contract" with anyone or call national grid? Does anyone have a central air contract????

Any info would be great!!

Make sure to call LIPA 3 days before you close. It takes them 3 days to put the account in your name for some reason.

Our water company contacted us - they left a note on our door with info for us to call them. It probably depends on who your water is with.

as long as you have a a closing date then you can call any of the companies. i called them all about a week to 3 days before closing and gave them our names and info so they could plan to have all the final readings done the day before or that morning. i had no problems.

we had to call LIPA, and the water co. I called the day before we closed because we didn't have much notice. Cable company took weeks to get an appointment to switch over so I would call them right away...

I know you are asking about utilities, but someone told me to do these things at the walktrhough and I was glad I did:

1. take a portable clock radio, plug it in to every outlet to make sure it works, inside and outside the house
2. every sink - turn the handles to hot and cold and make sure they all work
3. open/close/lock every window and door to make they all work
4. turn on a/c's if they are in the wall
5. turn on oven and all burners
6. flush all toilets
7. turn on shower to make sure it drains
8. turn on washing machine & dryer to make sure they work
9. turn on every light switch, in and outside of the house.
10. turn on dishwasher/disposal
11. turn on spigot outside to see if they work
12. if there is a built in microwave, turn that on too, including the fan, etc.


I am glad I did this because some of the window locks were broken, one of the locks on the sliding glass door was broken and a few other things, we got credits at the closing for these.
