I need help... My newborn is sick
hi, Im really at the end of my rope with my Dr's office... I want to see what you guys think...
My baby girl is 6 weeks old and EBF.... Always gassy since birth and I know her gas cry but this past friday she cried like I never heard her cry before.
It was more like a scream... she did that for 6 hours straight... I called the emergency hotline and Dr. insisted it was just gas. Next morning she had severe diahrea and started to vomit... one saturday 3X! Sunday no vomitting but still had diahrea and monday she vomitted twice after eating and tuesday (today) vomitted in the morning and still has very loose stool. All this with no fever but she has congestion.
Dr. said he DOESNT think its a virus cause there is no fever and viruses should get better with time (she is not improving). Then he said he thinks its a milk protein allergy and he wants me to pump and freeze my miolk but give her Alementum for now to see if the vomitting and diahrea stop. If they do stop then problem solved... if not then he said its not a milk allergy and we'll have to run tests.
I saw his partner Dr. on saturday and she made me feel like sh!t telling me that my baby is gassy and uncomfortable all the time cause of what I'm eating, she said I need to cut out all dairy, no green vegetables and no fruit at all except apples and bananas. What in the world is their left to eat?!
She is so uncomfortable... always fighting me when I feed her and squirming  BUt why all of a sudden on friday? She was fine with eating since birth... I dont want to give her formula, Im scared she wont take my milk again... Im so down about this, I want to get a second opinion first, my landlord recommended her ped....
What do you ladies think? What should I do?
ETA: I have been cutting out dairy for the past week (since before friday b/c she is so gassy) and I see not difference in her at all.

She could have a virus...she doesnt necessarily have to get a fever.
I'm not that experienced with the protein allergies. But there are a lot of moms on here who have gone through it. I wouldnt let them make you feel bad about what you're eating  Do you give her mylocin drops before each feeding? That always helped my DS. I would also give the alimentum a try and see if that helps.

Have you tried Mylacon drops? Georgie was like that for awhile and the drops helped with the gas a lot. (Check w/ your dr just to make sure it's ok to give the drops.)

Yes we started the mylicon like 2 weeks ago and its definately helping... she is still very gassy but doesnt strain as much to pass it or go #2. Im just so confused as to why she has this diahrea and vomitting.

DS went through something like this at around 5 weeks. We had to switch his formula, I didn't BF for very long so he was mostly formula fed. I tried Mylicon, and gripe water and neither worked. Along with the formula change we also gave him chammomile tea while we transitioned him. This helped almost immediately.
Hope she feels beter soon. i can completely relate with how you feel
ETA Ds didn't have vomiting or diarrhea.

I would get the 2nd opinion. I think it will make you feel better. What’s the worst that can happen, they are either going to be able to find out what’s wrong with her or they will possibly say the same thing as your ped. I believe in gut feelings. My DS cried once for over 4 hours and we went to the ER. DS was diagnosed with colic However DS didn’t have vomiting or diarrhea.
ETA: The crying fits/ colic started around 6 weeks.

we just went through this, but it was with formula not BF. we switched DS to Alimentum and its helping a TON!
no more spit up or puke, we stopped Mylicon all together when we switched formula and NO gas. he still has loose poops but only 2x a day instead of 8! 
try the Alimentum! It might help. Ask them if you can get a script for stool samples to check for the protein allergy! you will get your answer that way! (we are doing this now!)
ETA - just wanted to add that a milk protein allergy can come on at ANY time when they are infants! DS is 4.5 months and we are just figuring this all out. He was VERY gassy on Good Start but we gave him mylicon in every bottle and it helped. He started spitting up a TON more, and the diarrhea which led us to the Ped (not to mention blood in his stool)...

The reason it starts suddenly and later is that if it is a milk protein allergy, it takes time for the proteins to basically destroy teh lining of the babys gut and then finally it is so bad, even the smallest amount starts to hurt them bad. MY daughter was fine till about 5 weeks old and then boom, she screamed all day everyday. It took about 2- 3 weeks of milk protein free formula till she was finally better. ( alimentium didnt work for her, it has some proteins still in it and was enough to bother her....only Elecare finally helped) ...
I know it must suck not being able to eat what you want, but if you choose to BF and this is the issue, you really have no choice.
I would though, take the baby to a pediatric gastroenterologist for a second opinion.
If this continues with throwing up for more then another day or two, I would defintly go back to the PEd though....
Sounds liek an allergy though.

hmm, well my doctor did a stool test in the office to confirm blood (which it was) and then gave me a script for 5 different stool cultures. I would assume some are to rule out other things (paracites etc) but im fairly certain that they can determine if its an allergy or sensitivity by what the baby passes in its stool (different cells from the lining of the intestine etc.) Not sure why we are doing this otherwise 
maybe call a lab (like quest) and tell them that your doctor gave you a script for stool cultures because they think your LO has an allergy. Ask if thats normal, if those are normal tests the do in that case. They will tell you OR tell them you cant read the docs writing but you know they are testing for allergies and ask if that can be done via stool cultures!

First, he's wrong, and uninformed. Second, based on this I'd start looking for a new ped but in the meantime I'd ask the office for a ped GI referral, or on here for someone in your area. I can give you DS's ped GI info but she's in the city. There is a very simple stool test, they stick a litmus test type thing into their poop and it can pick up traces of blood that are unseen.
I BFed and had to be dairy free for DS as well. It can take at least 2 weeks, sometimes more for all traces of dairy to leave your system. Also try to avoid things with whey if it is found that he has a milk allergy.

This is just my opinion... I think the ped is just telling you to change your diet because you wont accept that it is just gas. Actually, I bet they have no idea what is wrong, and have no idea what to tell you.
IMO its a harmless bug, that is just making her tummy ache. We went through this at 3m. We tried switching formula etc, etc .... What worked best is a little rice in the bottle, 1-2 bottles a day. Just to solidify the poop and make his tummy calm down.
Our ped, who is the best in my book, but he didn't advise it, no idea why. Even when I asked if its okay, he just shrugged, like no comment. IDK, is it like not okay by AAP? anyway, it worked, it helped DS tons.
Ped GIs recommend it for reflux, in my mind its similar concept but on the other end. Does your LO take bottles, can you try a bottle a day with some rice cereal, like 1-2 tsp.
eta: Our friend is a ped, so I would ask him his opinion, and since 2m, he have been blaming milk allergy, I was BF and eating ice cream by the gallon. He wasn't too bad till 2m. I ignored him, because I didn't see any of the other symptoms. At 3m he developed diarrhea, he continued to blame it, and scolded me for giving him regular formula. I decided to try adding a little rice to the formula, DS was instantly perfect, and I asked what our friend the ped, thought. How can it be milk allergy if he's getting milk formula and not having any problems? He said some mumbo jumbo about how rice coats the stomach etc. At 4m we started solids, and DS was neither gassy nor had diarrhea. I honestly think it was just a bug, and rice helped my baby deal with it.

Could be a milk protein allergy. DS had uncontrollable loose BM's. 10 times a day sometimes..He was spitting up too. The spitting up was the reflux he had. I would definitely cut out the dairy for a while and see what happens. It can take a week for all the dairy to get out of their system...Try the new formula. Take a poopy diaper to the dr and have it tested for a milk allergy...
