ANTS?!?!?
It seems we are infested with ANTS!  
I keep a clean kitchen but I'm thinking maybe they're attracted to my cat's dry food that's left out for them all the time  That's where I seem to find them anyway!  and Lately I've been seeing them more and more and tonight it was the WORST! 
How do I get rid of those nasty little things?! Ant traps? Do we need an exterminator?

We have Terminix for ants. They come and spray around the outside of the house and used to spray inside the house. The ants are attracted to your cats food

ants are attracted to ANYTHING edible, even one dirty spoon in the sink and, yes, pet food. in my experience, if it's more than a few here and there, it's part of a bigger infestation that needs extermination. we rented a house that had them really bad, nesting right in the cracks in the foundation! no matter how clean & air-sealed every package was, i would still find highways of ants trailing across the floors to whatever new food source they'd discovered.
in our new house, we used alternative earthcare to spray for ants. it's non-toxic, food-grade pesticides. that did the trick, but i don't know how bad the problem was in the first place because we didn't wait around to find out.

we had ants once coming through a crack in the foundation outside - DH dropped a piece of rice on the floor that we didn't see and all of a sudden they were everywhere.
Used the Terro traps but they didn't work. So we bought that indoor bug spray I think it was Ortho Home Defense - sprayed all around where they were. It killed them all and they I vaccummed all the dead ones up. It was gross but they never came back...

Definitely get an exterminator. It is probably a bigger problem than you can see.

We always seem to get them when the seasons change. It also doesn't help that DD is a crumb factory. 
We use the little ant traps (kinnda like the roach motels) and they seem to do the trick.

We also get them when the seasons change. We use the Ortho Home defense around the outside of the house and the exterior and interior side of any door that leads outside. We also use ant traps.

This is what we did.
I find it is worse in the rainy weather.
We did caulk up a few cabinets on outside walls, the one under the sink.
Also-when I was pregnant and looking for non toxic ways to get rid of them someone told me about using powder. Works great but I had powder everywhere for months
Since caulking we haven't had a problem thank goodness.

We just discovered an ant problem by our front door last night. We sprayed Hot Spot Roach and Ant killer and I havent seen one at all today. We will monitor it and if the spray doesnt work, we'll have to get an exterminator.

We avoid the sprays since we have a toddler in the house, and as long as you do not have carpenter ants, you probably don't need an exterminator IMO.
I would get ant traps in the house and pegs that you can put outside the house in the areas where you see them coming in. Walk around a bit also and see if you can detect cracks or gaps where they are entering and seal those. If you find their home, remove it (I've heard pouring boiling water on it works well).

We had them bad here. I mean bad and i'm a clean freak in the kitchen. DH and I did some inspecting one night to find out where they were coming from and we found they were coming from the tiny cracks in our crown moulding (near the corners). We had an exterminator come out and give us an estimate... $250! We almost had them do it and then I did a search on the internet and found this magical stuff:
BEST STUFF EVER!!!!!!!!! I'll warn you, it's kinda gross b/c you have to put the gel wherever they are coming in inside the house every few feet and the ALL come running. It's ridiculous how many ants we had all over this stuff... but you can't kill them! You have to let them take it back to the nest and queen. An hour or so later we looked at all the spots where we put the gel and they were gone! Never to be seen again!!! That was months ago and I haven't seen one ant since. Magical I tell you!
