I had a contractor come last night and he cannot give me a price on cabinets until he has a design. I do not want to buy cabinets until I have a price, so how do I make a design for him? I am going to home depot on Sunday so hopefully they will give me the measurements I paid for.
He will not give a price until he knows where the cabinets are going. He just does the install i have to purchase the products. Also, he gave me a place that he recommends for cabinets (do not have to use) just to get a layout so he can decide on a price.

Yep I would go to HD and have them do a computer layout with what you want. It's free and you leave with the printouts. All of the pricing is dependent on your measurements....

well, that does make sense if you think about it.
How can he give you a price if he doesn't know what size cabinets you want, or how many, or any other pertinent info. (i.e. a 36"wide cabinet that is 40" tall would cost less than a 40" cabinet that's 46" tall KWIM?)
The design really has to come first, then you price out the supplies needed to implement that design.
Go to HD with a basic floor plan of your kitchen and some measurements and they'll help you come up with a design (and if you pick a cabinet there, you'll have a price to compare) then you can give that to your contractor for him to price out

sorry to crash, but doesn't a kitchen cabinet guy do this for you when they come to give you an estimate, wouldn't they tell you what they think would be best for the design of the kitchen??

i replied to your last post and my cousins business; they do that for u. my fathgers business that he had for pver 30 years, they did it for you also. any good company doesnt ask you to get it from somewhere else...?? call my family; they'll take care of you

Consumers website has a pretty nifty design tool. I just used it and it's not bad.
It doesn't get too detailed as to decorative stuff, but it can do the job.

If you are getting the cabinets from HD they have kitchen designers who can help you. Make sure you take the dimensions of the room, precisely including door opening and windows. They will make a computer generated printout, including placement ,etc. for you.

Depends on what you're asking someone to do. Are you asking for a kitchen designer to plan the layout and help pick out everything and also get the contractor(s) to install, or are you meeting with a contractor that will install what you have picked out. A GC won't quote a price if you don't have plans from an architect - how would they know what they are building and quoting. Sounds like she wants a price for installation, but isn't ready to say exactly what needs to be installed. The time and work involved could vary greatly depending on the number of cabinets that need to be installed, details such as crown molding and other trim, along with any structural concerns that may revolve around the cabinetry.
