Unexpected guests coming over...
I thought this might be a fun one...
You find out with very short notice that you are expecting company, whether for dinner, to watch a game, whatever.
What is your speed cleaning to make the house look nice in a flash?
Are they any good tips on what to keep on hand as last-minute appetizers, etc?

empty bathroom garbage cans, fresh handtowels, sweep. and cheese and crackers, cut up fruit, nuts, berries go a long way.

Or "pop ins"
This goes for family as well as friends
If they have to drop something off, it goes in the mailbox or the porch.

i cant comment on the appetizers because i never know what the hell is in the fridge... if theres nothing Shaun will run to the store for chips and dip and stuff like that...
last week we had 2 guests and we actually ended up ordering pizza because we had nothing...
sweeping
dishes if there are any
and cleaning the bathroom

we are experts on speedy cleaning - we had our house on the market for a year!  things had to be cleaned up in a moments notice.
kid's toys - we have a window seat - everything gets thrown in there or a random basket/bin
paperwork - thrown into a canvas bin by my desk
random "crap" we would throw it into any box (usually a diaper box was lying around) and I would put it into my car.
easy appetizer - hummus with baked pita chips (you can freeze pita bread to always have it on hand and all hummus ingredients can stay a long time waiting to be made)

Nobody ever just stops by except my mom or brother
and I don't do anything special for them
My house is kind of weird right now with renovations, so it is what it is. I haven't had people over in a really long time because I'm self-conscious about it & won't until everything is fixed.

This reminds me of something I found in my grandmother's recipe box, cut from a magazine (probably in the late 50's or early 60's). It suggested that every good hostess kept the following on hand for drop in guests:
Vanilla wafers
Marshmallow Fluff
Shredded Coconut
Red food coloring
Take a vanilla wafer, spread with marshmallow fluff, add another wafer on top. Tint coconut with food coloring so it's a light pink color. Roll the edge of the wafer/fluff treat in the coconut. Repeat until you fill a plate, and servce. Yum!

Vacuum, definitely vacuum. After that a quick spruce of the bathroom.
We always have something I can make a quicky appetizer out of.
But honestly, we rarely have 'drop ins" and I highly discourage it.

Yes clorox wipes are great for quick cleaning...if I don't have anything I'll have DH run to the supermarket and get some stuff.

DH does this to me a lot with baseball and football games since we have the big screen and surround sound.
I usually just do a quick once over in the bathroom, swiffer the living room (since I have a cat that sheds like crazy), and keep all the bedroom doors closed.
He usually has wings in the freezer, or they order a pizza.

I agree with the clorox wipes! Quick wipe down of the bathroom and kitchen, fresh hand towels and vacuum up the dog hair - along with throwing some of the random junk or mail into a bag in one of the bedrooms - usually does the trick for us!

I keep the kitchen and living room clean for the most part. My rush is to clean the bathroom. I will clean the toilet seat, around the sink, and will clean inside the toilet if I have time. I definitely also empty the bathroom garbage cans.
I am mortified if people come over and have to use my bathroom and it is dirty

I LOVE unexpected guests. I enjoy having friends/family over. My house is clean 99% of the time so I nevber really rush to "faux" clean, LOL! I can't stand messes, dirt or clutter. Clorox wipes are my best friend. Swift mop for the kitchen and bathroom floor for a quick wash. I always have salsa, avocado's, chips, coffee, cookies and cake on hand.

i sometimes get the call that someone is nearby and might stop by.
I try to keep the house clean day to day; but the only thing i'd have to do is a quick sweep (dog hair) clear the mail from the console table in the entry way. We usually always have juice/wine to offer and maybe some chips but that's about it.
ETA: Oh; i'd do a quick bleach of the bathroom if i have time and wipe down the coffee table (glass)

My mom hides things like wash baskets in the shower and closes the curtain..you just have to remember it is in there before you turn the shower on....

my house is usually very clean b/c i am home all day, every day cleaning...
if someone is coming (which is really only my mom or sister anyway since we don't really know anyone down here that would stop by ) i will light a candle and do a quick swiffer and fluff the couch pillows, that's really it...
when we have company visiting (to stay over) than i go psycho - my SIL is coming wed with the kids so the next 2 days i will be psychotically cleaning, i don't know why but i get crazy over it, especially with the dusting, vacuuming, disinfecting, i think i have a problem

I am the same way! I always try to keep things as clean as possible b/c of my fear of pop ins. If someone calls and they are liek 5 minutes away, i run around the house like a chicken w/o a head and start throwing things in rooms and close the door... DH cracks up!

I'm coming to terms with unexpected guests. I'm not one and I never had any in NY but, it seems to be common here on the west coast, something to do with their laid back attitude I guess.
I don't have a big house anyway (1800 sf) but, I try to keep the house tidy on a regular basis (nothing laying around and I wipe down the counters every day)
My biggest concern is the dog hair so I vaccuum the floors and furniture and fluff the couch pillows. Make sure the bathroom is clean and lite a few candles.
No one goes upstairs so, who cares how that looks.
I can get this done is 20 min.
As for food we usually dont keep extra bc we are trying to watch our diets so, I would just order something.
