meh... my DH is Nassau PD. We were finally just able to buy a house here in Nassau because he finally reached a paygrade where we'd have enough monthly income, and I went on his health insurance, which saved a LOT of money that was coming out of my paycheck.

If he had to take a paycut, we'd likely have a hard time. Why? Because we count on the fact that his union contract has his salary all spelled out for the next X years and that it won't change.

Yes the taxes are high, but paycuts for certain employees are not truly fair. You're cutting the salary of a small sector of the working county residents to benefit ALL residents of the county.

Salary cuts are NOT the only way to save money on taxes. My DH had to work a certain number of days over th past few years FOR FREE to help mitigate tax increases. So to the PP who said that the police unions get everything handed to them on a silver platter, I assure you... that is NOT true, although let's face it - it's what Newsday would like us to believe.

Why is it fair that I get a paycut but not fair if your DH gets one?

I'm paid by salary--as I'm sure many others on here are. So, for all the nights I've stayed at work until 8-9-10pm technically I'm working for free too.

I'm not trying to be sassy, but it doesn't make sense to me that its ok for some and not others. We counted on my salary too--and when it was cut we had to make do with my new salary.

You are a union employee whose salary was cut?

I didn't mean that it was fair to cut some people's salaries but not others. I probably didn't explain myself clearly - I' sorry. What I'm trying to express, bottom line, is that there are other ways, aside from salary cuts to cut spending. By way of example, my DH's union agreed to have them work the free days, instead of taking pay cuts.

I am also salaried, and I work 50-60 hours a week, and will be spending my Sunday in my office. So I know how you feel. Chat Icon

I think its fair.......

so many families are struggling in nassau county, increasing the taxes any more willl force more people out.....

pay decreases are hapening in alot of places. the company I work at had ALOT of layoffs over the past year.... no they are not "union" but your talking some people who worked there 15, 20, 25 years since practically when the company started... people who weren't ready to retire yet. A job is better than no job.

The solution is easy- cut all the dead weight- at ALL levels...top, middle, bottom. Have a system that's actually based on PERFORMANCE, and not just longevity. But, they'll never do it.

And i agree- take some from the teachers.... they have summers off, anyway Chat Icon Chat Icon

For those that are comparing what their private company did/didn't do/etc...- honestly, it's like comparing apples and oranges, imo. Completely different systems and what works for one does not work for the other.

Yes, different systems but cutting expenses is universal. I'm doing more at work than I ever did before.

We had hiring freezes and pay cuts and no raises.

Why does no-one want to touch pensions and retiree's benefits? All of these municipalities are in the red because they have to fund pensions and retirees, but there is never talk of reducing those benefits Why not? I have a real problem with municipal employees (including teachers) who can retire after 25-30 years, which in many cases results in people collecting pensions longer than they were working. Also, county can raise revenue by charging retirees for a portion of their medical benefits.

Don't even get me started on the scams that go on at LIRR; it's friggin criminal.

Re: Nassau residents

I am a Nassau resident who is a teacher IN the city but NOT FOR the city - state funded program - no union, no contract and I can be fired at will.

That being said, I REALLY need to tell people who say that teachers "have summers off" that they are WAY off base. City teachers as well as MANY other teachers in the local area get paid a TEN MONTH SALARY spread over 12 months - union or not. We are compensated for the hours we work. I teach summer school and get an ADDITIONAL salary because I am NOT obligated to teach in the summer but rather I NEED to make extra money. But you can be damn sure that if I was obligated to teach/work 12 months and worked til and past 5 pm (which I actually do already correcting papers, writing IEPs, educational evaluations, lesson plans AT HOME) that I would command/demand/expect a much higher salary than I do now.

So please people, stop saying that we have summers off. We don't get paid for that time. We just get less per week stretched out. (Unless you have a contract drawn up by the G-ds of education)

Cutting expenses may be universal, but where it's cut from is not.

You do more at work, i'm assuming, to help ensure job security (whether it's the main reason or not). With the county- the person who does the least, but has been there the longest wins. They had hiring freezes too, as well as lag pay and other concessions these last few years. The salary you make privately is also significantly different than what you would make if you worked for the county, so cuts to one vs. cuts to the other... and comparing the two, is pointless, imo.

Because baby boomers are a huge population and they vote. They cant change what people are currently receiving in terms of pension benefits, they can only change what future benefits are received - part of the state constitution.

Its all good but there are SOME who truly believe that we do have summers off and get paid for them.

Oh and if you worked where I do, you'd get bodily fluids, trauma and whatnot in the classroom as well. I teach in psych day treatment. Another LIFer works with me - she can back me up on this.

So when a kid spits on me and hurls a chair at my head in summer school when I am 8 and a half months pregnant and I have to work because I don't make a heck of a lot, I just say "SUMMERS OFF BABY" and all is good with the worldChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The dollar amount of the paycut doesn't give a full picture of the cuts. Is there a projected percentage? For example, if someone makes $150K a year, $7,500 is a 5% cut which should hurt too much. However, if someone is making $50K a year, that same amount is a much higher percentage and would hurt.

Re: Nassau residents

my company had significant pay cuts and pay freezes to save jobs. i think that with the economy is the way it is, no field should be immune, especially if its needed to try to balance the budget and avoid a huge jump in taxes.

i do think there is a way to do it without cutting salaries, but it would mean totally reevaluating the system and a lot of the waste --- something i dont think would ever really happen --- but which would be ideal.

I'm guaranteed nothing. No contract, they can fire me whenever they want. I do more because we changed the business plan to do the same work with less employees. If someone is working and is not pulling their weight, they get fired. I don't think that's how it works in the county. So I do more, make more but I have no guarantees.

Something has to be cut..and if it's salaries and benefits because their business model is flawed, then that's how it has to be.

I also pay a lot to commute to my job that pays me more. I pay a large amount for insurance and I have little or no job security.

My work week is 60 hours long so if you figure my hourly rate, I bet it's less than some county jobs per hour.

I'm not saying that pay cuts and benefit cuts are good but I feel they should be universal. Most take civil service jobs, gov't jobs..etc. for the security, benefits and pension..I'm guaranteed none of that.

Not a Nassau county resident...but I agree that they need to look at their top employee pay. The problem I have with asking the unions to take a paycut is you are asking people to take a paycut who mainly live in your county - to avoid spreading that cut to all of the residents. It's fine to take money for the top guy living in his mansion but that's not who this is going to really affect. It's the low-wage workers. If they proposed it based on a salary scale, I'd feel better about it.

Also what I completely disagree with is he proposed local legislation to set aside existing county labor contracts. My understanding is it is a groundbreaking legal move that could affect every future labor contract. How does he have the authority to break an existing contract that was entered into & ratified. What value will contracts have?

But that doesn't necessarily mean that the unions get everything handed to them. Police pension issues we're dealing with now originated in union negotiations 20++ years ago, and I think it's fair to say that it's not like it was back then...

At my job, I pay $500 a month for medical and dental.

We didn't get a raise for the past 2 years.

All offices had to cut our budgets by 5%.

Why shouldn't unions have to cut back too?

Nothing, not a thing. That's a HUGE issue, and the entire union is up in arms about it. I overheard a conversation yesterday between union reps and they are willing to (almost literally) die to save the integrity of our contracts.

If you had a contract, that you fought for several years to get, and then your boss said, Too bad, we want to take it all back - wouldn't you be pizzed and want to do something about it?? THAT is the crux of this issue. NOT that union employees think they are above paycuts and givebacks. But that they will have to break out contracts to get it!

I still stand by what I said early on that I would be angry. Not taking that away from you (or other union employees).

However, I personally think times are changing and NO ONE is really "guaranteed" anything anymore when it comes to employment.

Not saying that it's fair or right.......

I think if Unions were run without corruption from the beginning this wouldn't be happening.

I do agree that salaries should be cut.

It can't keep being put on the residents.

Cut out the dead weight too. The people that work for the County that just sit around or drive around and do nothing.

I could just hear my husband's voice talking about the good ole days when someone would get thrown down an elevator shaft....

It is a huge issue - and while it affects EVERY union - I think it also affects private contracts. How do you honor them if there is legal precedent to set the contract aside because it doesn't work for you any longer.

I'm fine with cutting salaries, if it's necessary AND it's during contract negotiations. The time to do that was when you were agreeing to it.

I have not gotten a raise in 2 years, going on 3.

The property tax in Nassau is off the charts.

SO yes, I agree 100% that the unions should get cut. One thing to start with is the overuse of over time. I wonder if that was cut how much money would be saved.
