homeowners insurance + flood
Hi, looking for insight - buying a home and just learned I'm in a flood zone so I need flood insurance to close.
I'm shopping around but if anyone can recommend their carrier and/or any lessons learned I'd appreciate the info.

Shop local agent's who can help you with your homeowners insurance, once you find the best home policy, advise his agent that the property is located in a flood zone. Good agents will know and tell you.
Flood policies are run through the government. It is not like a home policy where different companies will be different prices. The zoning is determined by your location. The zone, ded's &elevation, covearge all factor the price.You may want to see if the pervious owner has an elevation certificate and/or survey. If your home is a certain amount of feet above sea level you may qaulify for a discount. You also can quote different deductibles's $1,000, $5,000 etc. Good luck

We have auto, flood and home through a broker, they shop the prices for you, I rather deal with a broker.

brokers can be especially helpful if you ARE in a flood zone - as most private carriers (Allstate, Liberty mutual, Progressive, State Farm, etc) are either not writing or limiting their exposure on Long Island. Brokers have access to companies that do not deal directly with the client but still write homeowners on LI - even in flood zones.
And what the other poster said about Flood insurance is true too - The price is the same no matter what (as long as the coverage amounts are the same) the only thing that would make a difference is how much of a fee the broker / agent is adding to the policy.

We had private brokers and we did our own work on this, and we are probably going to end up with Travelers they came out to be the cheapest for us
