What is it like? Where do you keep it? How is it organized?

I have a draw in my desk and every year I go through it an shred most of it. I only keep a folder for taxes.

I have a folder
- taxes and it is subdivided with folders for
medical/dental receipts, donations, home improvements, stocks, misc.
- school
- insurance
- work
- car (I keep the maintenance receipts as those help with eventual resale value or if there is a recall on a part - if you have had it repaired and paid for it sometimes they will reimburse you for it)
- warranties and receipts for big purchases)
- manuals

I have a filing cabinet.
The top drawer is:
Phone/Cable/Internet
Gas/Electric
co-op maint.
Co-op papers
Residential papers (like voting stuff)
Bank- a folder for each bank
School loan
Bottom:
the insurance papers-a folder for each type we have
car maintence papers
car loan papers
car papers (you collect a lot of paper when you buy a car!)
memberships (like AAA, magazines, etc)
School related papers (UFT, BoE papers)
Other random stuff.

Thankfully my husband takes care of this for us because he is the most organized person & I'm far from it!
We have a few filing cabinets in the basement with files for different categories:
house bills (each year has a separate folder, after a few years he trashes the old stuff)
credit card bills
car bills
job info
pay stubs
taxes
grad school
banking
medical (one for each of us)
Probably forgetting a few.... he's very good about keeping it updated... whenever I need to find certain paperwork, I have to ask him to get it for me!

i have an accordian folder in our kitchen in the draw. then i have 3 drawers in my desk that is full of stuff as well.
