DH and I each have our own insurance. I've been wondering if I should switch to his now since I don't know if/when I'll return to work?

Re: TTC and no medical
i have mine through my job and DH through his. i think it would be very difficult & expensive to have no insurance and have a LO. but i guess people do it all the time.

I thought if a couple is married they cant have two different insurances I thought it was mandatory to pick just one for the both of you...

Re: TTC and no medical
My job offers, just WAY TOO MUCH!!! His doesnt. I had no medical with my son, had medicaid to be exact. So Im afraid when we start tryin what happens if things go wrong? We will have to pay for things ourselves in full and what not. Am I making sense?

So your DS has Medicaid but you dont? I believe if you meet income requirements (and you get pregnant) Medicaid will cover your pregnancy. However, if you and DH together make too much then you wont. You can use this website to check your eligibility.

ETA: If that is not the case then yes, I do believe it will have to come out of your pocket but Im sure the hospital will work out a monthly payment plan with you. I think thats how these things work..

Nope. DH and I have maintained separate policies b/c it actually worked out cheaper that way. Once the baby arrives, we'll all go under DH's policy b/c I don't know when I'm returning to my job.

agreed. DH and i have separate ins. from our jobs. we both get it free, meaning we do not pay towards it. so we each have our own as a primary and the other as secondary ins.

Re: TTC and no medical
Honestly, if you don't have health insurance I would not in any way attempt to get pregnant. The prenatal care alone adds up and forget delivery...........my C-section cost almost $20K. Thank god for insurance because all I was responsible for was the $200 hospital co-pay. Even a vaginal delivery will run you $9K-10K. Then you have to consider ped. visits once the baby is here and your PP visits with the OB. With TTC and raising babies..............health insurance is a MUST.

Agreed. I had to spend a weekend in Winthrop earlier this summer, and the bill came out to 11K!! And that's in addition to typical bloodwork, sonos, and pre-natal visits. Without insurance, we'd have to hit lotto to pay for it all.

Re: TTC and no medical
I am on my DH's plan. My DH was in the hospital this year and it only cost us $150. We got the Explanations of Benefits and his stay would have cost almost $200,000, plus all of the doctor visits before and after. Crazy!

ITA with this. . and while it seems like a lot out of your paycheck it's really nothing compared to what things will cost. . and if you have it you won't think twice about doing all the tests, doc visits etc you need but without it I don't know how you'd afford it w/o medicaid or something. . for example once you get your BFP most plans are just ONE co-pay for all obgyn visits (regular office) and if you're going every 3 weeks in the beginning and then every week at the end - that would be thousands of dollars. . also many plans cover a lot of infertilty treatments too like I now mine covered my infertitlity acupuncture which would have been 90 a visit!
GOOD LUCK making a decision and of course

Re: TTC and no medical
I guess I should have made myself clear. I know that I can get medicaid if DH doesnt have insurance by then, had it with my 1st son. Im just afraid if we try and I miscarry or have complication then that we will have to pay out of pocket.

Re: TTC and no medical
It wouldn't even cross my mind to start TTC without health insurance...not only is the prenatal care extremely expensive, but my first child was born at 30 weeks and spent 6 weeks in the NICU....almost a million dollars later, I can't imagine the devastation it would've cost my family had we not had insurance...and that was just the NICU....not to mention the tons of doctors for 2 years after he was born.

Ok, so you can get Medicaid if your DH doesnt have insurance by the time you get pregnant? Is that what you're saying? Im assuming that if your DH does not have insurance by the time you get pregnant and you qualify for Medicaid that Medicaid will pay for any complications of the pregnancy.
