AFP screening

I go for my AFP test at my doctor's office on Sept 2-I'll be just over 16 weeks.

What should I expect? Do they do a sonogram?

Will they be able to tell me if its a Chat Icon or Chat Icon ??

My anatomy scan is September 23, so in a month! Ugh the wait is killing me-

TIA!

Re: AFP screening

For me it was more blood work and another sono. Then they take the AFP results and the NT results and give you your chances of downs syndrome. This is the test that they found 2 soft markers on my sono but both were gone by my level 2.

And the dr told me the sex, I was exactly 16 weeks, but I found out by mistake and we really don't want to know so I never had them confirm it, so they could be wrong.

Good luck

me too

ETA: I had a sono at 17 weeks but that was unrelated to the AFP test. But if you are asking if they can tell the sex at a sono at 16 weeks then I would say yes, they probably could if the baby is in the right position.

Re: AFP screening

Thanks girls!

So my NT scan results were that our baby has a 1 in 10,000 chance of downs..and everything else blood wise-is perfect, I'm not a carrier for anything.

They might end up just doing blood on me because I had a sono yesterday (14 weeks) since I was in pain...doctor tried to look but the baby was going nuts down there!

But I'm hoping for another sono Chat Icon

Re: AFP screening

My AFP testing was done at a lab, so it was only bloodwork for me.

NOTHING except an amnio will tell you that your baby is down's free. The NT scan and AFP give you your "chances" of the baby having down's and/or any other chromosomal abnormalities. But even if you get a super duper crazy high percentage that your baby will not be born with Down's, there is always a slight chance.

They just drew blood at my 12-week appointment for my AFP and then I called a week later to find out the results.

I've had no complications so far as far as my NT ultrasound and the AFP results. But now they saw a white spot on our baby's heart during my basic anatomy scan at 19 w 3 d and I'm going for a detailed Level 2 with a perinatologist at Duke on Monday. Apparently the white spot is a soft marker so now instead of my chromosomal abnormality chance being 1/10,000 it's 1/5,000.

Kinda crazy they're making me go for a 2-hour appointment at Duke with a specialist because of that... I didn't ask for it or anything, they just said that's what they do when they see a white spot. I hope it's gone when we go on Monday. I'm a little nervous but they said it can't effect the baby's health as far as how her heart grows and everything. So I'm not really sure what all the fuss is for.

Believe me, I'd never heard of anything like this when it comes to what sorts of results you can hear at your tests. But it's a sono I wouldn't be getting otherwise... my dad will be in town on Monday when I go, too, so I'm happy he'll get to see the baby.

Re: AFP screening

They did this for me I think at 13 weeks... They did a sonogram do check the thickness of the neck and then they prick your finger and take drops of the blood in these circles on this envelope. Together they can help indicate downs and spina bifida.
