Another nipple shield question

I've been using a nipple shield on my left breast since being in the hospital last week. DS was having no problems latching on the right until about 2 days ago. Now most times he wants the shield on the right! I've been following the advice some of you gave me regarding staring with the shield and taking iit off midway. Most times this works. I've also been pumping after 1 or 2 feedings for 10 mins and that has helped me not be in so much pain. So I guess my questions are am I doomed now with the shield? Do I continue what I'm doing with trying to wean him? Is pumping after morning and night feeding too little or too much? If it matters DS is 9 days old, eats about every 3-4 hours for 10-20 mins on each side. Thank you in advance!

I am not an expert but I pump in the morning after ds's first feeding and right before bed after ds's last feeding. He is 11 weeks and I have a great freezer stash already and keeps me comfortable throughout the day now. I also pump if he gets a bottle just to keep up the supply.

As for the nipple shield I am a horrible example and still use it, I plan to try and wean him off this week. I think it should definitely be a temporary solution but again I am STILL using it Its kind of a pain to always need it to nurse so that's my main issue. I have heard it can affect your supply as well but I have a huge supply so idk.

I think so far you are doing a great job, you need to do what works! My plan is just to keep taking off the shield as I'm nursing and hopefully soon my lo won't need it at all

I used a nipple shield with DD#1. My LC explained that nipple shields can negatively impact milk supply, so she instructed me to pump after feedings.

She told me to try to get DD to latch without the shield as often as possible- even if it was for only a mninute or two. Eventually, she'd stay on longer and longer.

I had DD weaned off it before she was 10 weeks old.

Do I pump for a specific amount of minutes and on both sides
?

I was told by an LC to pump to two minutes after my milk stopped coming out and I would do both sides.

I used the nipple shield for a while - I was so sore it hurt soooo bad. Eventually, DS didn't notice or didn't mind when I switched him off of it. Just keep trying each time and eventually it'll work out for you. I never pumped after using it and never had a supply issue. HTH and GL!!!!

You are not doomed. He is so little and the nipple shield is easier. DD was the same way. I would wait until he is three weeks to wean. Just pull it of mid feeding. Meanwhile pump after each feeding and you will have a wonderful freezer supply!
