Any other new homeowners out there feel overwhelmed?
We just moved in about 3 weeks ago and has already had to have our electric upgraded, roto rooter here pulling tree roots out of the drain line, our brand new fridge broke, and the latest is we need a new roof. I have no idea how much that will cost but I think I'm going to be sick...

Are you sure you need a new roof? Maybe they can just add another layer.
Definitely get a few estimates and see what each has to say.
We're 6 yrs into owning our house and I still get overwhelmed when something breaks. It's STRESSFUL!

Are you sure you need a new roof? Maybe they can just add another layer.

The roof is older - when we had our inspection they estimated about 2-4 years before needing a new roof but now the singles are bubbling and lifting and they are 2 layers so they have to peel and redo...

Yeah , there is always A LOT to do. Our plumbing is all fritzy because our house has not been lived in for over a decade. If we did not have 3 plumbers in our wedding party we would be $1000s into things now instead of about $30 for a few parts and a beer/burger here and there.

Yep! One month later we have a new roof, new sheet rock, new flooring and new lights! I JUST WANT TO MOVE IN!

we weren't even in our house a month and we had roto rooter here pulling branches out of the pipes! Of course the pipe backed up on a sunday. Hang in there, it's a lot of work but worth it!

Well we're 3 years in and its been overwhelming to say the least. I think the first year is the hardest. Just trying to familiarize yourself with utlilities, mortgage and upkeeping of the house. My best advise is take it slow, one room at a time

Absolutely! We closed almost 3 months ago and with all the work we've had to do on the house we STILL haven't moved in  But there's a light at the end of the tunnel and we're finally moving in next weekend. We've been very overwhelmed with how many things come up that need repairs that we never even thought of! It's still an adjustment but I'm taking these things in stride more now than when we first closed. Hang in there, things will calm down eventually

it's definitely overwhelming! And sometimes I fear it's never really going to get easier - you just have to get used it.
We closed 01/26/09 and moved in 02/01/09. For the first month or so we slept on our mattress on the floor of one of the spare bedrooms because our bedroom was being completely redone due to a leak that we had in the ceiling (floors, ceiling, walls, windows, closests).
After we finally move into the bedroom we still couldn't unpack because we wanted to have the den re-done. That took another 3 months.
A year later we still aren't fully unpacked because we decided we want to re-do the main living area (kitchen, living room and dining room).
In the process we encountered floods in the basement requiring the cement around the house to be re-done, and most recently the ceiling in the basement fell down so now that has be fixed/re-done also.
it NEVER ends

Yup - we closed exactly 9 months ago today and I am still COMPLETELY overwhelmed at times. It seems that everything we do in the house has a domino effet. We can't just get windows, need to do the siding at the same time, so we might as well get new doors too oh and since we want to replace our back door with a slider, we might as well do our kitchen at the same time
Not to mention the $600 LIPA bill we got that's due in two weeks!

Lets see. We need a plumber, an electrician and MAJOR landscaping done. We are not DIYers so doing things on our own is not an option. We are not even close to being unpacked and I am just about 8 months pregnant. Lots of things to be done and lots of money to be spent.

I think we are the same person!! closed in early June and are still waiting for cabinets... and who knows what else will happen.... are you living with family right now ... we are and are Good luck

OMG WE ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOO OVERWHELMED!!! We closed June 25th, started gutting the house June 26th. We have no walls up, no working bathrooms, electrician coming tomorrow, Plumbing is in progress. FH is doing most of the work with friends, plus working full time. We have to be out of our apt by Aug 31st and I'm praying one room is done and one bathroom so we have somewhere to live!!! (starting to hyperventilate as I type this) good luck to all!

I've been in our home for a bit. The projects are never ending. Try to prioritize first what's really important and what needs it and then do the other projects. Congrats on your new home. I may have missed your post.

We are in our house 7 years next week and I am endlessly overwhelmed. Sometimes I miss the days of not even thinking about anything in the place except bedding, furniture and wall decor.
And nothing out there is less than $1000 to do, even the smallest things. Forget about how high they can go.
