Question about kids who are just starting to walk
Should I get Tyler sneakers now? He takes up to 10 steps not holding on to anything. Is this the time to get him some sneaks from Stride Rite?

I was told that the best thing to do was go barefoot, but if walking outside or in public, walking shoes are the way to go.

I did.. My Mom made me Seriously, she dragged me to the store and actually bought the shoes because I kept telling her the doctor told me no shoes until he is running unless it is to protect his feet from dangers when outside... But, whatever.. he walked right on time and is doing fine with shoes.. plus I would be very worried about burns from the hot ground at this point.. I just read an awful story about kids getting severe burns on their feet from the asphalt in AZ.. granted it's about 20 degrees hotter there.. but, ouch!!

But, good luck to you now that he is mobile
I would let him go barefoot as much as possible, but good shoes for when you are out and he might be walking.

I would - or at least some kind of shoe. I personally prefer barefoot at home - but it is still summer and you will be out and about a lot so it is a good idea to have some kind of shoe on your DC if they are walking - b.c at some point they are bound to walk outside.
Etd to add my ped recommends shoes once they start cruising (shoes of some kind) for outside and barefeet indoors. You never know what they will step on outside.

 He is walking already??? I cannot believe that!!!!!!!!!! Wow, you are in for it now mama!!!
I'd definitely get him shoes for when you're outside, but I'd keep him barefoot in the house (and the grass actually) as much as possible....shoes for when you're out & about somewhere, on pavement, etc.

DS was still barefoot for quite a few months after he "started" walking, unless he was outside. Helped that he started walking in December so we weren't outside much at all. He was always always barefoot indoors.

Here too. I left him in socks or bare feet for the first month and a half of walking. We got shoes when he really started running (at like 11 months). Though he did get stung by a bee on his foot outside before then while walking in socks.

I was wondering about this too. The daycare provider immediately asked if I was getting him shoes when I told her he was cruising. I didn't want to as I had also heard barefoot is best, but thinking about him possibly stepping on a bee makes me worry.
What about those Stride Rite flexible shoes? Has anyone used those - any idea if they are better b/c they are more like walking in bare feet?
I just hate the thought of him having to wear socks and shoes all day long in this heat. We saw some cute "sandals" with the flexible sole that looked much more comfortable for this weather.

They have Robeez (the flexible leather shoes), and Stride Rite has something similar. I would skip open-toed sandals--I have one pair for DS and he trips on them more since the front catches on the rug or pavement, etc.
My DS's issue was that his feet were too large for any of the early walker shoes. They do make early and pre-walker shoes that are less "shoe" like than the advanced walker shoes. I think Stride Rite advertised a clearance sale now too--DS LOVES his shoes from there!
The bee sting really wasn't bad, and now we know that he isn't allergic.

I actually kept K in Robeez until she was actually walking. I thought they gave her a solid grip of the ground (next best thing to barefoot) and offered protection when outside.

My DS has been taking steps since he was 10 1/2 months. I bought him a pair of really soft sandals for when we are outside in a public area but for the rest of the time he is barefoot and he is flying around the place now - doing turns and his balance is amazing - I think you should let him go barefoot for now as he is still learning and then get him some shoes for the fall.

I would get some sort of sandal from stride rite. They have a pair that strappy with closed front but a good sole. I had those for L when he started walking since it was also summer.
