I don't think people really wear long dresses anymore.
Really? I went to a few non-black tie weddings lately & people wore gowns.
I would wear a gown, b/c I like to dress up. DH would whine about having to buy or rent a tux, but would wear one in the end, b/c he is a rule follower.
If I thought it was faux black tie, I'd probably suggest DH get a fancier suit than the 1 he usually wears (I love 3 piece ) & I'd probably wear this dress that I have that he below the knee & a little fancier than I usually wear to weddings. ( I wore it to a wedding DH was in & wearing a tux for).

I have never been invited to a black tie event, thank god. If I were, our attire would be their gift since it would cost us a fortune just to get dressed for the event
If I received a black tie invite, I too would go in a tux and gown.
