So you don't think a dark suit and dressy cocktail dress is appropriate?

Well I would prob wear a gown. You ask if a dressy cocktail dress is appropriate--in the summer months I think you could get away with it but I might do a gown personally bc I like them.

As far as my DH, he does not own a tux and he would not buy one for a wedding, sorry--dark suit it is Chat Icon

Re: If you received a wedding invitation and it said Black Tie

This is a major sore spot w/ me.

If it is a LEGITIMATE black tie event - You're supposed to wear a gown, and DH a tux.

HOWEVER, I know a million people who have never attended a black tie event in their lifetime, and all of a sudden their wedding invitation says "Black Tie" Chat Icon

If it's THAT kind of black tie event, I think it's more of a 'Please show up dressed APPROPRIATELY for my Saturday night wedding" and I'd consider a dark suit and fancy cocktail dress appropriate.

This is what DH & I would wear to a normal wedding so I would go for a tux and long dress for a black tie wedding.

If it's a REAL Black Tie event, and you are not in a gown, and DH not in a tux, you're going to be inappropriately dressed

Re: If you received a wedding invitation and it said Black Tie

I've been to two, one DH wore a tux and I wore a black knee length cocktail dress. The other one DH wore a dark suit and I wore a navy wrap dress.
Both weddings people were in both, some men were in tuxes others in dark suits and the women - some were in evening gowns and others were in dressy cocktail dresses.

This annoys the hell out of me honestly. I don't own any gowns.. and while I could buy one.. I'd never wear it again because I hate the way they look on me, so it would be a waste of money.

I am invited to a black tie wedding in August. The couple is asking people to go out and rent a tux and buy an evening gown (for those who don't have one) but they couldn't invite a 31 year old with a date. Yes I'm a bit bitter, but I'm not buying a gown regardless..lol

ITA.

Back in 1990 my cousin had a black tie wedding in NYC... seriously Chat Icon neither her or her DH was from NYC or "rolled like that" if you know what I mean.

It was a royal PITA for my Dad who was on strike with Verizon, me (in college, no $$$) and my brother in high school.. it cost my Dad a lot of money he didn't haveChat Icon Chat Icon He did rent two tuxes.

I would follow the above advice. Dressy cocktail attire at the very least with an elegant evening bag and accessories. Maybe you can borrow some if $$ is an issue.

I was torn about doing it for my own wedding because we had so many OOT guests and people who IMO dress way too informal for a wedding. Some of their outfits were barely business casualChat Icon

Re: If you received a wedding invitation and it said Black Tie

DH and I had a black tie wedding. It was a Sat evening (pretty late. started at 8:30PM).

It was at a temple and I'd say 70 - 80 percent of the men wore tuxes. Women were different. Cocktail or evening gown is fine too. As long as we're not talking about a casual summer dress.

I've been to several black tie or black tie optional and either wore a very dressy cocktail dress or evening gown

If someone doesn't own a tux and doesn't want to rent a nice black suit and tie works great too. I saw a lot of those at my wedding and had no issues.

Want to add... we were going to put Black tie optional, but we thought "black tie" sounds nice and pple are going to wear what they want anyway. As long as they know it's a dressy, evening event.

I think black tie means tux for the men, regardless.

for women it means a very dressy cocktail dress or a gown.

We went to one in October at the boathouse...I wore a gown and DH rented a tux. Annoying, but what can ya do?

Most of the women were not in gowns though--there were a MILLION black cocktail dresses.

Re: If you received a wedding invitation and it said Black Tie

I have been to 2 black tie events, one DH was in the bridal party and i wore a gown and another DH rented a tux and his vest and tie matched my gown.

At both events though people were in both, so if you do not want to rent a tux, a dark suit is fine. You can wear a cocktail dress, but it should be a fancier than normal cocktail dress KWIM

I think it means tux and gown, but I think you can do black suit and gown, I think its streching it with a cocktail dress.

Last time we had one, I wore a cocktail dress b/c I would never wear a gown. DH has a dark CK suit, white Theory shirt and a killer jacquard tie.

There are obviously several ways to interpret it
i think it depends on the bride and groom's expectations and who will be there, along with the location.

we're going to a wedding in a few weeks that stated 'black tie' on the invite. One of the grooms friends asked the groom if he could wear a dark suit, and was told 'just rent a tux will you'

i recently attended a 'black tie welcome' wedding and was a little confused by it because i wasn't sure if it meant optional or preferred. i'd say 75% of the guys were in tuxes and there were lots of gowns. I went in a black cocktail dress and honestly felt like i could have been even dressier.
It helped me decided that i definitely had to go out and buy a dressier dress for the black tie wedding in a few weeks!

On my invites, I put "Black Tie Welcome"

Most of the men dressed in eitherTuxedo's or dark suits.

Almost every one of the woman wore evening gowns.

I recently went to a "Black Tie requested" wedding. Some men wore tuxes, some wore suits of varying colors (I believe there was a tan suit) and the only gown was on the bride.

Your DH should wear a tux-- i think you can wear whatever you want... I don't think people really wear long dresses anymore. I have been looking for dresses on and off for the last few months, and they are all SHORT.

Re: If you received a wedding invitation and it said Black Tie

Such mixed feelings about this. As a guest I think it's an imposition for your host to require you to acquire a tux or gown if you don't have one. However I also always strive to dress appropriately for every occasion. Scott owns a tux so we went to the last black tie dressed accordingly but I was kind of put off that my friends did not even attempt to comply so not sure where I stand. I guess I don't think brides should be requiring it but not sure how to solve that dilemma so I do think that guests should comply if and when the bride does require it.
