WWYD visiting someone in the hospital
We just received horrible news my dh grandmother is in icu and has been diagnosed with cancer of the liver and pancreas. She is also fighting some sort of infection with a high fever. She is 81 and does not want to take any measures to save her life, she wants to die without any interventions. Dr's aren't giving her long.
Would you visit someone in the icu, or with an infection? I want to go, my mom thinks its a bad idea. I've been visiting her all along in the nursing home but she was never really sick, just had a hard time getting around. I don't know how long she will make it and I would feel so bad if she were to die and I didn't get to see her, plus my DH isn't taking it well and I think needs my support?

Re: WWYD visiting someone in the hospital
Honestly, I would ask your DH's grandmother's doctor. It might not be the kind of infection that is communicable, so it would not harm you or the baby.
I'm sorry you guys are dealing with this

I would also ask the doctor. The cancer wouldn't prevent me, but the infection might depending on what it was.

I agree. Speak with the doctor and maybe they can give you a mask or something...

I totally agree. I think there is a really good chance that you will be able to visit her, but you & your baby's safety comes 1st (of course).

Re: WWYD visiting someone in the hospital
I agree to check with the doc, but honestly, I would go and DEF wear a mask, and make sure you thoroughly wash your hands before and after. Don't stay long!!!

Re: WWYD visiting someone in the hospital
Honestly....I work in a hospital and am around infection ALL DAY Long.... I (knock wood) have had a VERY healthy pregnancy without any issues except morning sickness....
It may be an infection that is not transferable at all... If it is something communicable, they will have her in an infection controlled section and you will just have to wear a gown and gloves.
Shy of her having TB....I would go visit her...especially if you are going to regret it later...god forbid she were to pass away
JMO...good luck

Re: WWYD visiting someone in the hospital
my best friend has cancer and I have visited her throughout her illness- there was one particular infection that she had that I was not able to visit because she was toxic to me but the doctor knows that I am pregnant and visit often and advised her- definitely talk to your dh's grandma's doctor
lots of hugs for you and prayers for dh's grandmother

Re: WWYD visiting someone in the hospital
I am very sorry that your DHs grandma is sick. The same thing happened to me when I was PG with DD except it was my grandma. Unfortunately her doctor did not let me visit her in the hospital because she had caught an extremely contagious case of MRSA. My parents had to wear special hospital provided suits with masks to visit her and then were instructed to dispose of the clothing they wore underneath. I unfortunately did not get to visit her. I was able to call her and speak with her on the phone.

I am a nurse and work in a hospital and therefore around sick people all the time. I would go visit her. Ask the nurse or doctor what precautions you should take. And wash your hands when you leave.
