I think it's really easy for people to say they just make their kid hold their hand when they walk. Not every child allows it. .

My thoughts too!!

DS does not always want to hold hands this occasionally results in meltdowns less then 100 feet into the walkChat Icon

not that we use one but I am not against it!

What I don't like about the criticism is the underlying " you shoudl teach your child to hold hands instead". As if those who use it are taking the "easy", " lazy" way out. That annoys me.

ITA! No matter how hard I try to teach my 16 month old to hold my hand while we're out, the reality is that it's easy for her to wriggle away from me and she's still too young to really get it. I say, do whatever you need to do to keep your kids safe.

Well I personally hate them. I did before I had kids, and I do now. I do think they are to doglike for my taste. I do have a VERY wild child, who HATES his stroller, but you know what to bad! You want to go out you will sit in your stroller and deal. I would rather him scream then look like a poodle! This is of course MY thoughts. Im not saying any of you who USE the Leash thing are treating you kids like poodles. JMO!

Personally for me a leash is not an option. My older DD never had one and learned early on to hold on to my hand if we are walking somewhere. And for my DD who is now 11 months old and walking pretty well. She is walking next to me and I am holding onto her hand. Unless we're at a playground, she will always be holding my hand as I know the dangers that cars and accidents can cause.

I just don't see why you would need a leash when the child could be right at your side holding your hand. Also if you are walking and a car or something does swerve or come your way, you have more of a chance of getting yourself and your child out of the way if they are at arms lenght and not at leash length.

While this is my opinion and the way that i choose to raise my kids i would never knock someone for using a leash, since in reality it is better than the parents who just let their kids run wild. So atleast you are taking some control over them.

Your not implying that kids on "leashes" are out of control kids are you?

THIS is where these threads go bad.

Saying, if my child doesnt hold my hand , we dont go out is ok for YOU ( collective you) , but I think for others, its impossible. If my son broke free from my hand for any reason in a crowd, serious things could happen....and 2, 3, 4 yr olds etc. are UNPREDICTABLE. To say a child will always hold a mom's hand is kinda naive ( not of you, just anyone who might think a "trained" child will remain so at all times. )

Then again, saying a leash belongs to a dog, not a child begs to hear the arguement, that training your child to "stay" is in the same fashion.

There is no right or wrong here. It is preference, but I think wording has to be done carefully here to have respect for both sides. A tone of " well its hard for me, but I do it anyway is condescending to those who simply CANNOT do it"... Might not have been intention but that's how it comes across ..
Some think putting a child on a leash is barbaric, some think not doing it is careless and foolish.

I was interested in seeing why people thought a certain way too.

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

I think it really just depends on the situation. I never even thought to use something like this with DD.

I know some little ones are way more active than she is and too young to understand safety issues. I also recognize that some parents or grandparents may not be able to keep up with a little speedster and they use them to keep the child within a safe range.

At 2.5 I ran away from my mother who was almost 9 months pregnant. She couldn't keep up. A stranger grabbed me as I ran onto a busy street. She said if that man wasn't there I would have been hit by a car.

Although I can say I don't like the way it looks, I try not to judge people when I see it, each situation is different and I don't know the circumstances.

This is exactly what my mom says about them.

She raised all of us without it by telling us hold her hand or be stuck in the stroller.

Just my opinion. But nobody can watch their child/children 24/7. Rather be safe then sorry. It takes a second for a child to get out of a parents sight or hand and BAM...THats when the kid gets hurt or goes missing...

I dont care what others think. I can be watching my child and it could take 2 seconds for a psycho perv to scoop her up and run. Being 5 months PG at my age, I cant run after her so if a leash keeps her from being swiped, a leash it is. Id love someone to tell me to my face that my kid looks like a dog.

If a perv really wants your kid a lease isn't going to stop him

You MIGHT be right but those extra two seconds it may take for them to try MIGHT just give me enough time to kick em square in the nuts or the taco. And though I cannot run, I can still lift my legs damn highChat Icon

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

When I was young and had no children, I admit, I used to judge parents that used those leashes for their children.

I now have a DS who is a runner. In fact on Tuesday he ran from us at the zoo. It was awful. We don't have a toddler leash and I am not planning on getting one, however, now, I can completely understand why a parent would want to use one. For all those parents that I unfairly judged when I did not understand or know how difficult it truly was, I am so sorry. For those mommies with twins, my hat goes off to you.

As for how to deal with a toddler who is a runner, when we are without another adult, DS goes into the double stroller with DD. I have tried to let him walk next to me while I pushed DD, but it just did not work out.

But it would probably be a deterrent to choosing MY kid.

Exactly! I used mine with my 18 month old when I bjorned by 2 month old.

It really bothers me when people judge about it. I should whatever I feel I need to do to keep my children safe! It especially bothers me when people without children judge.

I had a friend say the leashes were awful- she has no kids- I said to her " How can you say that when you never went out alone with an 18 month old and a 2 month old?"

My 3 yr old won't hold my hand nor will she tolerate a leash. I'm the mom you see dragging her child across the floor in the grocery store. Once DD#2 is mobile I'll be the mom who's kids are duct taped togetherChat Icon

I don't see what's bad about them at ALL. Parents who use them just want to keep their kids safe. What could possibly be so wrong about that???

I have been taking my twins out by myself since they are a few weeks old. Now they are 18 months, and I am 9 months pregnant. I'm still chasing after them and do NOT use leashes. I don't like them, but I am not here to say others shouldn't either.

I had the monkey back pack for DS when he was younger. I tried using it once at the zoo, and he pulled on it like a wild dog. Chat Icon He would literally pull until he was hanging and I was holding his entire body weight. Needless to say, the harness was retired. Chat Icon But I would have gladly continued using it if it worked well for him.

I was leashed my mom sewed and my dad was an engineer so I think it was a homemade device, I don't have pictures but I remember having a blast with it. We lived in a very unsafe urban area.

I was a very independent child and I wanted to be on my own, it gave me great liberty.

That's my 2 cents ... to each his own.

Can I totally agree with you! I am also 5.5 months preggo and take DD (who is one of those nonstop all day runners) Took her to the park alone, DH works crazy hrs as a cop so I am usually ALONE and I just wouldn't use a leash, never liked em never will. JMHO

I think they are a great idea! I plan on buying one this week. Nina hates holding my hand so I think it makes sense. I also don't care what people think, too bad for them if they don't like it, I would rather a safe child over an appeased stranger.

I have the bear backpack one made by Eddie Bauer that was like $15 at Target.

My almost 3 yr old LIKES it and it gives me peace of mind at places like the zoo. I really hate when people judge something that could dave his life! Whatever, if it works for you use it.

DS is 2. We used a backpack leash once when we were in Dutch Wonderland. I was too nervouse being around all those people and it was hard to keep him in the stroller the whole time. I know it only takes 2 seconds for a LO to wonder or pull away. So although I personally wouldn't use it daily, in this type of situation, it gave me peace of mind.

As I stated on the other thread, before having kids, I always said "I would never..."
Now that I have 16 month olds twins, I am singing a different tune. I haven't bought one yet but am seriously contemplating it.
DD refuses to hold my hand, she tries to pull away ALL the time. DS just started walking, so I don't know how he will be, but there is no way I can run after them both at the same time. And even if DS will stay by my side and hold my hand, I can't be dragging him along while I have to constantly chase after DD.

I got the monkey backpack for DD when she started walking. The two of us have traveled alone quite a bit and it was a sanity saver when I was lugging her carseat, diaper bag, my handbag and the stroller through the airport. I piled everything on the stroller and pushed it while holding the tether - this way she got to walk (because she wanted to walk everywhere) and burn some energy/stretch her legs and I didn't need to worry about chasing after her.

I would never leash her up and walk her around the block. And I would never use it after a certain age/maturity level. She's almost 3.5 now and has known for a while that she sticks by me.

Before someone makes a comment to a parent using a "leash" think about this...I know someone who used a tether on her older toddler because he is autistic and a runner. She has three other children besides him and it's understandable why she had to use it. She recently got an aid dog to help her son and prevent him from running off.

I thought the original OP was just asking if anyone had any recommendations as to which leash to use-not whether or not anyone agreed with using one in the first place. I have one, my son calls it a backpack. it is a monkey and we got it from Costco or BJ's. It has been a life saver for us. It has given my son more of the independence he craves even though he was a runner. THe nice thing is, we were able to use this as we were teaching him to hold our hand. Now most times we don't need the backpack and he is better at holding our hands. I would still definitely use it when going to a very crowded place like an amusement park.

I work with toddlers with autism and other disabilities and have learned never to judge another parent for how they handle their child. You never know what special needs the child may have. Some parents have to do anything they can just to get through the day.
