Breastfeeding and bottle feeding ???? --another question added at bottom

Does anyone know can you breastfeed and use a bottle (either with pumped breast milk or formula) combined right away OR do you have to breastfeed for a certain amount of time before you are allowed to introduce the bottle??

Re: Breastfeeding and bottle feeding ????

I pumped and bottle fed DD from the beginning because we had latching issues.

Lactation specialists will tell you not to do this. But it's what worked for us.

I will probably do the same with DS so he is familiar with the bottle.

Re: Breastfeeding and bottle feeding ????

My DS was in the NICU for a week when he was born and the nurses there were giving him bottles of formula. It has made it very difficult to BF now...he has a hard time latching and he gets so frustrated once he actually does because he is used to the fast flow of the bottle nipples. I've been working with a lactation consultant to try to overcome this so my opinion is try to refrain from giving the bottle right away. The nurses in the NICU blew me off when I voiced my concerns about nipple confusion and said it wouldn't effect BFing but it totally has.

Re: Breastfeeding and bottle feeding ????

Emmy wa sin the NICU and was born 4wks early. Her issue was eating and latching so I encouraged them to do whatever they had to so we could get her home. She was on formula and a pacifier. Once home she would latch and then stop when instant milk would not flow. We kept trying every now and then and after we got Tommee Tippee bottles and at 8wks she latched and drank fine. Now at 16wks she is ebf when i'm home. I really believe it was a preemie issue. So the answer, for us, is it has no effect on her and she does fine......she always has

We introduced the bottle at 3 weeks. Luckily, DS latched well so we were told to wait this amount of time. Once we introduced the bottle, he took to it relatively well.

I BF and use bottle. Tyler is 2 weeks old and I have no problems with either.

I am doing this as well. Everyone told me not to do it but it really seems easier than breastfeeding. She is totally getting breast milk but it is just from a bottle.

Re: Breastfeeding and bottle feeding ???? - another question added at the bottom

I am really just trying to decide if I should even attempt breast feeding or if I should just skip it and go right into pumping/bottle feeding (with both breast milk and formula or just only formula)

Right after DC is born, it is going to be a very busy two months - I have a few commitments that will have me staying away over night and leaves DH with the baby and then I will be going back to work very quickly which I will not be able to pump at all. So if I either breast feed or pump it will really only be for 2 months - is it even worth it???? or am I better off going right to formula???

I BF and gave a bottle from the start with both boys without a problem.
