UPDATE: Went to the ped. She changed the anti biotic to a broad spectrum one, added flovent with an aero chamber, maintaining the albuterol nebs and prednisone until the specialist on Thursday.

Sent us for a Chest X-ray... Part of her lung has collapsed due to the pneumonia... GREAT!.... She is still satting fine 95% on room air so she doesn't think she needs to be hospitalized. We got a pule ox today to monitor her sats at home, the minute they drop I'm off to the hospital....

PLEASE if you are friends with me on FB don't mention this... I have a few "hysterical" family members on there that if I tell them this they'll start FREAKING OUT!

I'll let you know what the pulmonologist says on Thursday






and it's called DENIAL......

She has asthma, whether I call it reflux induced or cold induced... it's freakin asthma.

Heck, I'm an asthmatic I know.... It's not sensitive lungs its ASTHMA....

Ok, now that is out of the way.

LONG story short. She's been sick about 2 weeks now.

started on neb treatments every 3-4 hours 9 days ago. Put on prednisone 7 days ago

diagnosed with pneumonia (No chest X-ray) 6 days ago


Getting worse.... or same.

Call ped on Saturday, she's not better. Ped says, I'm not in town or I'd have you bring her in, take her to Yale.

I'm not taking her to the ER just cause the ped doesn't have coverage. We find an urgent care fascility so I can get a pulse ox on her and have them evaluate her.

MD there is really cool, ex-paramedic so he knows my level of knowledge. Pulse ox is decent 94-95% room air and she is wheezing. Starts her on Singulair and says to continue prednisone see ped on MOnday

Give Singulair and she wakes up Sun morning WAY LESS congested!!! YAY!!! THought she was getting better but all the Singulair did was get rid of the congestions so I can hear more underlying wheezing....

I called my pulmonologist today, one of the BEST in the North East, Best in CT. Earliest he can get her in is THursday on his lunch hour

Going to the ped at 1 today to go over everything and get another pulse ox

I'm at a loss.... this ped can't manage this I know.... what the h e l l do I do until THursday?

Has your kid ever been sick this long at home with nebs every 2-3 hours and steroids for so long and not hospitalized???


I'm not even sure what I'm looking for here.... I'm EXHAUSTED... I've been playing healthcare practitioner more than a mother lately and I can't take it...


any advice? things to ask? what would you do???

Personality wise she's been great, a little more whiny than normal but playing and smiling... that is the only thing that is keeping me sane.

She doesn't LOOK sick but the symptoms is that she's pretty sick!

Help? I'm going to have a major meltdown soon!

OMG, thats scary...You poor guys

My only concern would be that the pulse ox would dip when she sleeps...which is normal to begin with , but if its starting at 94 ish, it could easily dip into the 80's asleep..this is what happened with Chloe and why she was hospitilized for so long with her pnemonia.

But the wheezing couls also last weeks with pnuemonia and not be a bad thing neccesarily.

Is she eating/drinking normally? If she is, thats a great sign and really a big plus and indicator that she is ok .

See what the ped says....if they say hospital, ask what will they do there that cannot be done at home.

I am not sure if I am correct or not but doesn't the singular work over time as opposed to results from one or 2 doses? Jordan took is years ago, but this is ringing a bell with me.

This has been my life since Frankie was 7 weeks old...he was sick for weeks in a row...thank God never been hospitalized...though there were a few close calls.

I am have Asthma, my hubby has severe allergies. SO an official "asthma diagnosis" is more than likely. BUt for now, I treat my kid who has "reactive airway disease" diagnosed by his Pediatric Pulmonologist with the usual Asthma protocol, i.e. corticosteroid and albuterol, until he is old enough to complete the breathing tests to give him the official diagnosis. We see his regular Ped when the specialist is not open. We also keep a bottle of predisone on hand for respiratory distress.

Hang in there. I will say, with regular treatments, this year was bad, but nothing like last year, even despite a bout with pneumonia a month ago.

our longest was 9 days.

pulmicort twice a day

have you tried duoneb? we need that when ever it is cold induced.

duoneb every 3-4 hours

no dairy at all

presidone 5 days

i HATE going to ped's office when pulm can't see us. i feel like whatever pharm rep just left, that is what they try and sell me on. like leave me alone, lets get him hooked up, give me his number so i can see if we need the ER.

I wish post ox machine wasn't 100.00! i need to get one, i just hate spending more.

the dairy for us is huge though.

i know you are exhasted. i swear sometimes we would take him to ER because i needed a few hours off. we would just stare at his stomach all night...bags packed ready to throw him in the car. i am so sorry you are going through this!!

Maria this sounds dreadful. Awful. and I'm sure that the lack of sleep is NOT helping you cope at all.
No medical advice, but can you call the urgent care ped who you liked and follow up with him, between now and Thursday?
Also make sure the pulmo's office knows that if they get a cancellation you will take the appointment!!!! Is the office staff there helpful or are they dingdongs????

I really don't know anything about asthma so there's no medical contribution I can make but I'm just hoping Lexi feels better!!!! And you too!!!

I have nothing to offer but and to tell you that even though I know you want to go back to being Lexi's mom and not part of her official health care team, she is lucky to have you as her mommy since you know so much about this stuff. I would be in completely over my head and I give you a huge amount of credit!

i'm so sorry mama...i know nothing about asthma or it's conditions just wanted to send you some of these in hopes that she gets better real soon...

only thing i can think of - can they tell what she's allergic to? maybe she recently developed an allergy to the dogs? maybe the season now that its getting nicer out?

eta - i meant to say, what triggers the asthma, not what she's allergic to!

I cant give you advice from a parental view since my DD doesnt have asthma (as of now)

But as a child, i had very very bad asthma. Hospital all the time, pump regularly, a cold would knock me down so much worse than anyone else.

My asthma was allergy-induced. We had a cat and a dog (yorkie). Dog didnt bother me, but cat did. Once the cat passed away (my fam never put two and two together i guess, was different back then), my asthma got soooooo much better.

As of today, my asthma almost non-existant, the ONLY time it acts up is if i go into a house with a cat (im that allergic) or pollen/lots of dog hair

I would try to get her to an allergist for testing if i were you. That way if she is allergic to anything in particular you can control it and hopefully the asthmatic episodes will lessen.

OMG, I just saw this. How terrible for the both of you.

Why doesn't the ped think she should go to the hospital? I'm pretty sure you can go against your ped on this one and take her. No one at the hospital would question you. Poor thing!

Poor little thing!!

Not that you asked.....but I would bring her to the hospital at this point....you've done what you can....and it doesn't seem to be getting better....I would need to bring her to be monitored in case something goes wrong....
And you need to keep your own sanity, and focusing on her health for this long can't be good for either one of you!
