Has anyone installed a gas fireplace?
After being in our house 5 years, this is the last thing on our project list! 
We have a mantle and "space" for a fire and we have gas in the house, now we just have to install a fireplace. We will need to get something with litte or no depth because the mantle is already flush with the outside wall.
Has anyone done this? How long does it usually take? And any recommendations for who to use in Suffolk?

Yes - we did - we used Basic Energy East in Huntington.

eta: They installed in a day. I *believe* we had to have someone else hook up the gas to it... I'm not sure. If you call them, they should be able to tell you the procedure.
We priced out a bunch of places - the units themselves were pretty much the same price everywhere - Basic Energy had the least expensive install price.

I know you said you need a shallow unit - the shallow ones we saw weren't as realistic as the deeper ones.... Since our LR isn't very wide we bumped out the house.... I am going to attach a really pathetic drawing of the side of our house.

Since you're going to be opening the wall anyway...... also - when you're looking at units - there was one unit where you can turn the FP on, get the flame, but NO heat would be emitted into the house. I wish we had done this b/c that sucker gets hot. I imagined cozy christmases by the fire... no way that's happening. Ask about it - they'll know what you're talking about.

Excellent! And I love the graphics 
I spoke to one company today and they gave me a few websites to check out before they come out for an estimate. We won't be able to bump out the side of the house because that would require a variance, but we hope to build out the wall on the inside to accomodate the unit and maybe put bookshelves on either side.
