Weaning off a nipple shield
My dd is going to be 4 weeks on Thurs and I have been BF with a nipple shield. I had a lactation consultant come in and everything but I am having difficulty weaning off the nipple shield. Every time I try, dd wails and won't latch. Any suggestions? TIA!

I am still on the nipple shield at 5 weeks, but a counselor suggested trying to take it away after DC's eaten a bit b/c then your nipple is fuller and easier to grasp. GL!

I weaned my DS by starting each feeding with the nipple shield on! At first I'd let him eat 5 minutes and then I'd quickly slide it off and get my nipple in his mouth (he'd finish the feeding no prob). After a week or so of this I decreased the time to 3 minutes and so on until eventually he didn't need it at all! Good Luck!

Thanks. Still having trouble latching and using the shield but according the the lac consultant and pediatrician, it's ok.

I was never able to wean him of the shield. I had to use it for a full year. I definitely will not use it for my next one.

same here. I used it for 8 months. My DD latched on great in the hospital but it was hurting so I used the sheild so I could heal. She then wouldn't latch without it Sometimes when she was really sleepy(in the middle of the night) I could get her to latch for a few minutes without it. Good luck!

Persistance.
I did the same thing. Just keep offering without it and one day DD will take it. The nipple shield is a savior, but a bia tch to get them off it.

I used it for the first 8 weeks or so. I was getting so sore, especially at night that it was more of a crutch for me than for DS. I would start with it and then after your let down, take it off and see if he'll continue to feed. If not, keep trying every few minutes.

Thanks everyone. I spoke to a lac consultant again because the weaning is just not working. She said if it works, keep using it. I keep trying but DD cries and won't latch but latching beautifully and eats with the shield.
