xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
DH & I took a breastfeeding class and the lactation consultation gave us instructions on how to feed from 6am-12 so baby starts getting used to sleeping 'thru' the night. She encouraged us to wake the baby if she is sleeping to eat... mainly because you want your LO to be on your schedule vs you being on theirs. I thought this made sense, but friends with new babies say let sleeping babies sleep. I find this may throw off their body schedule if their schedule isn't the same. Any opinions?

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!!
Never wake a sleeping baby! (That's my opinion, anyway).
My DD was sleeping in 6-hour clips when she was less than a week old. I never woke her. She's a happy, healthy 15-month old now--she didn't starve.
I think the only time you really need to wake the baby to eat is if they are not gaining weight. Otherwise, enjoy the quiet time!

ITA!!!!
Unless your baby needs to gain weight, there is no reason to wake them. They will get on a schedule eventually.
I gave birth to an 11 1/2 pound baby and I BF him. I didn't wake his fat a$$ up and he is just fine. And he was sleeping through the night pretty dang early.

FULLY AGREE!!! NEVER wake a sleeping baby. And there really is no way to get an EBF baby on a schedule, they create their own. You'll see DD was sleeping 8hr stretches at night by 9wks old. Every baby is different.

I agree! we did this and within a month DD was sleeping through the night. If she is hugry, she lets us know and she is like clockwork...she will start to fuss every 3 hours on the dot!

I wouldn't wake a sleeping baby. Sleep is when kids grow and their brains get what they need.

ITA!!! I did this the first week and the ped quickly told us not to! All you will wind up with is a cranky baby! IMO a EBF baby is fed on demand-DD is much happier now that we do that!

We were told to do this until he gained a certain amount of weight. I would check with your pediatrician.

I did wake my babies and I already told DH if we have another we are NOT doing that again! They had told me at the hospital to feed them every 3 hours and thats what I was doing. I would not do it again.

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
Once Lily was 3 weeks old, we would wake her so she could eat every 3 hours during the day. It really helped her create a schedule and she thrived on that schedule. She was sleeping through the night by 6 weeks, and I think a large part of that was due to the fact that she got plenty of formula during the day.
I know a lot of people disagree with that method though. It worked for us, and if we ever have other children, I'll likely do it the same way again!

i agree! We did this with DD and having her on a schedule was so helpful! and it helped her sleep longer at night because she was getting her days and nights confused in the beginning...

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
I NEVER woke my baby during the night EVER! During the day, I'd wake if it went more than 3.5-4 hrs, but that's all. Other than that, I'd let him sleep. Newborns need so much sleep too!

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
What we did was both...during the day he gotten woken up to feed. After 930 pm until 630am he "called the shots" (I didn't wake a sleeping baby). He would only wake up 1-2 times per night to nurse until he was 7 weeks old and started STTN.

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
My newborn is a sleeper, I don't wake her up to eat to keep her on a schedule, but if I wake up after 4-5 hours of her sleeping at night because my boobs are SO engorged that they are painful, she will empty both boobs and go right back to sleep for a few hours. It just depends on the baby I think!

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
I learned the hard way not to wake a sleeping baby. We were told in our BF class to wake the baby up to eat if they sleep more than about 4 hours. We woke him up once when he did this and not only did he not want to eat, he cried for 2 hours straight until he passed out again. It was a rough 2 hours for DH and I.
My DS will wake up when he is hungry. I have since then never woken him up to eat.

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
I was told that up until they are 6wks old they should be woke every 4 hours to eat and not to let them skip a feeding. At about 8wks Emmy started sleeping 5hrs at night, since 10wks 6hrs and just this week started at 7hours. Her "sleeping" stretch is from 10-5. She has always been a natural night sleeper and until they are about 3-4 months they can not tell the difference anyway between night and day.

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
I think it depends on the baby. If your baby is gaining weight and is healthy, then no, don't wake him/her to feed at night.
But if you want to get him/her on a schedule during the day, you might want to wake them then.

Re: xpost from pregnancy: wake or not to wake a sleeping baby
I would definitely not wake DS to eat. I let him sleep. especially early on b/c of his colic and belly issues, sleep was hard to come by. once he started getting better and sleeping better i left him even if he was due for a bottle. when they're hungry, they'll wake up.

I'm new at this but this is what we have been doing- it just seemed to make the most sense as far as letting babies be but at the same time trying to instill the whole day and night thing...
