1 week old baby and a 1 year old cousin visiting...

My SIL wants to bring over her 1 year old to meet his new cousin. I'm a little apprehensive about it. What did everyone do about their newborns meeting cousins?

I let them come over. As long as the child is not sick, does not kiss the baby on the face and the mother washes his/her hands, I don't see a problem.

As long as the 1 yr old is not sick, you should be fine.

I also didn't let children hold or touch my newborn until he was 8 weeks old.

With my first I let everyone around the baby from the day he was born. It was the summer and we were always outside.

With my second who was born in October I didn't let any of the kids visit him until 6 weeks.

Even if they appear to be healthy, you just never know. My niece was perfectly fine on the Sunday she came by to drop something off with her mother. On Wednesday she was diagnosed with swine flu. Thankfully she didn't go near the baby, but I was flipping out.

ITA Since he was about one, my sixteen month old has a had a cold a bunch of times. It's hard to tell with toddlers. I would hold off until the baby is at least 6-8 weeks old, just to be on the safe side. Your SIL should understand.

I see no reason why she should not be able to meet her cousin. At 1, she is not going to want to hold the baby, she is probably just going to toddle over, look, maybe say "baby!" and walk away to find something to play with.

I'm in the minority here, but I'm not letting cousins around DD until 8 weeks. I feel like children in school/day care pick up all sorts of things and you never know if they are carrying something and just not sick yet. Also I know all my DD's cousins are dying to hold her, so I figure better to just wait. That said, none of them are only 1 year old, and since that's too young to ask to hold her, and if the baby isn't in daycare/school - I'd probably be ok with it.

both of my nephews came to the hospital to see DS when he was born and one of them came when DD was born.

the way i see it, is adults and kids carry around the same germs, so if your SIL comes without her baby, she is carrying the same germs as them. make sense and KWIM?
