babies & cats

Anyone have concerns with their cats sleeping in the bassinet or crib with the baby? I've already found my cat laying in the bassinet, a mere 6hrs after the bassinet was in the house...

Re: babies & cats

No because I keep DDs door closed so the cat does not go in.

When DD slept in our room in the bassinet, I kept our bedroom door closed.

Our cats seem to be totally drawn to the crib, so we keep the door to DSs room closed at all times.

My cat never went IN the bassinet, but, LOVED the basket underneath!
As for the crib, the nursery door was always shut for DS and now is always shut for DD.
I have 2 bassinets, one in our bedroom and 1 downstairs near the den. Thats the one with the basket. DD is a little peanut and at 9 months old, we are finally going to pack it away and set up the PNP. The cat never bothered DS in it, so, Im hoping he won't bother DD either.

Re: babies & cats

I don't... DH does LOL
My cat is a male, 16 years old... usually he was just going the opposite spot that the baby was...like if baby was in the PNP he would sleep on the changing table. But ONE time I did catch him go sleep next to baby in the PNP...but he was far away from him...like waaay under the changing table. Baby only sleeps in it during the day so I always keep an eye out, ...he's eyeing it as we speak now LOL

Females cats you may want to be careful with...they get motherly instincts sometimes. My sister had that problem... and would be waaay to close for comfort...so she had to get that netting to keep kitty out. HTH

Re: babies & cats

The door is usually closed, so I'm not concerned, but a couple of weeks ago they were supposed to be napping but were sounding all excited on the monitor. I went in to find out what they were doing and one of the cats was laying in the crib with DD. He must have snuck in there and hid under the crib while I was putting them down. I thought it was hysterical. He would have been fine sleeping with them, but they would have never been able to fall asleep with the excitement of him being there!

Re: babies & cats

put tinfoil in it, when they cat jumps in they will land on it and they HATE the noise and will jump right back out. They will do it a few times, but most learn to not go in there.

My cat was much more of a concern before DS arrived adn really once DS was here, it wasnt nearly as big of a deal as I had anticipated it being.

He left him alone, would never go in his crib if he was in it.

Re: babies & cats

One of my cats ventured into the crib once before my DS was born. I picked him up and threw him out. I saw him trying to go back in couple of times, and I yelled at him and he stopped. There was no way I was going to allow him to claim that space.

Now that DS is home and his scent is on all of his stuff, the cats stay away.

We even leave a baby blanket on the middle of the living room floor all day and the cats don't go anywhere near it.

I never had an issue with the cats going in his crib, bouncy seat, swing, etc. now that my son is home. They learned pretty quicky if it smells like the baby...stay away!

Never had a problem with the kitty. She was interested in certain baby items before the baby arrived but it was just curiosity because they were new. Once the baby came home, she has no interest in being "in" with the baby....so much for those people that told me that i needed to get rid of my cat because my kitty was going to smother my child to deathChat Icon

if you continue to have a problem, you can put balloons in the bassinett and/or crib.

Re: babies & cats

i would love the option of closing the door, however, we have tried that and cat will meow outside of the door until you let him in. he's done it for hours until we finally gave up to get some sleep. and he's a cuddler so all i need is for him to snuggle with the baby like he does to my head (or ON my head) while she is in bassinet, crib, PNP, anything.

aluminum foil doesnt work he plays with it, spray bottle doesnt work tried for jumping on counters, etc...

looks like my last resort is my only option- mission give cat back to inlaws is in full effect.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry. I have three very snuggly cats and none of them were interested in the babies when they were newborns. They never went near any of their stuff. The incident I described JUST happened and my babies are almost 14 months. They thought it was the greatest thing in the world. They absolutely LOVE the cats, both of their first words were cat!
Why don't you see if it is a problem before you try to rehome the cat? I am sure you will find there will be no issues at all. They seem to have some sort of instinct that tell them these are little people and they shouldn't do the same thing they do to us big people.
And won't you be around the baby in the beginning? If you have a nursery set up, start closing the door now so the cat knows he is not allowed in this room. If he meows for awhile, so what? He'll get the message before long.

Our cat loved tinfoil balls and swatting it around, but the surprise and sound/texture of landing on it, usually freaks them out.

couple of questions-

1. i'd hope the cat is declawed?

2. I'd hope the cat doesnt have night terrors?
