Checking a car seat on an airplane...
Does it count as a piece of luggage if I check it in? Will I have to pay extra to check it?
Not sure if it just makes sense to rent one with the rental car rather than bringing our own.

Ours counted the last time we flew on Southwest, but we had them in bags so I'm not sure if that's why. They did know what they were and we had to sign waivers that they weren't liable if they were damaged in transit.

It depends on the airlines. Check with your airline. We just flew Southwest last week and they allowed a car seat and stroller to be checked free of charge. Jet Blue allows them to be checked for free as well.
ETA: We checked ours with out luggage and also got a bag on wheels to transport it in which made is pretty easy.

Call your airline. I'm pretty sure it did NOT on JetBlue and it may have on Southwest (but we never have a million suitcases, do I don't pay attention)
We put ours in a laundry bag and wrote our last name across it

I flew with American Airlines and they allowed the car seat and stroller for free. I bought the car seat bag from BRU for $20 (not the red one) and if there is empty seats on the plane they will allow you to bring the car seat on the plane.

If you bring the convertible, and buy DC a seat, you can bring it on, but if not, you can check it

No it doesn't count towards your baggage allowance. I would DEFINITELY bring one if you can - heard too many horror stories (old seats, dirty, running out of seats, etc). Plus they don't install them for you and most won't give you directions to insure you install them correctly. You don't know IF they have been in an accident or how clean they are. If you can lug it I would.
Etd to add - SOUTHWEST DOES count it towards your baggage allowance though - Jet blue, delta do not...

Two (2) items of travel equipment for infants and small children, such as walkers, child safety seats or collapsible playpens, may be checked and transported in substitution of one piece of the free baggage allowance for each fare-paying passenger at no charge.

We bought a backpack with wheels to carry the car seat around the airport (its actually pretty light!) and there was no charge to gate check it at Southwest - however, the flights we were on ended up having extra seats, so we brought it on and DD sat in it during the flight.

Delta charged us to check it with our luggage. It would be free if we checked it at the gate.

Just to add some lines will charge you to check a stroller or car seat AT the check in desk BUT not at the gate. Something to look into.
I love that southwest gives you two free bags per ticket - I had having to pay for bags. We are going on Jet blue in May we get 1 bag pp - and have to pay after that but even IF we pay for the bag it was still cheaper than what southwest and other lines were charging when we bought the tickets (we got a good deal).

A big convertible carseat does NOT count as a piece of luggage on Continental, even though the stupid skycap told us it did. I also pack the carseat bag with tons of toys for the trip. I would never rent a carseat with a car because it's so easy to bring.

I believe the difference is that many lines charge if you check it with your luggage but NOT if you gate check the seat - same with a stroller.
If you have a choice I would gate check it - I'm sure when you have flown before you have seen them really throw around the luggage - I think it gets less handling (less tossing etc) if you gate check it anyway.
