Sledding on the cloverleaf ramps of a highway

WHO DOES THIS!?!??!

It drives me absolutely nuts to drive home and see cars parked on the side of the ramp with kids sledding down the hill from the cloverleaf. This seems so dangerous for the kids. Is there not a better place to go sledding????


I see it when I go from Sunrise Highway (eastbound) and get onto Nicholls Road (northbound). Can this even be LEGAL?

They do this near my home in West Babylon....right down the street from the 1st precent. I guess its legal, but def unsafe IMO!

I used to see a lot more when I was younger. I even remember my parents and grandparents bringing us when we were really little. I think its what they used to do when they were kids.

I have no idea about the legality of it. But I do know it makes me disgustingly nervous. All I can imagine is a kid sledding right into traffic.

You're not alone. I have seen this in WEst Islip getting onto 231S from the Sunrise Hywy. service rd. with cars parked practically on the ramp in the dark. This seems to go on everytime we get a significant amount of snow. These parents are crazy. When did this become acceptable?

I think it's so unsafe. I'd flip out on my DH if he ever took our kids to do this. I think he has enough sense not to though.

Whenever I see this, I want to post about it and always forget. How in the world can that be legal? It's so incredibly unsafe and scares me to death.

i used to do it when i was younger! it was SPECTACULAR and one of my fonder memories...keeping in mind - there was always a parent at the bottom...if not more than 1.

eta: we used to do it on wellwood avenue - on the sunrise highway offramp!

I did this growing up. I spent a good portion of my time sledding from Robert Moses Causeway by the on ramp from Montauk Highway. In all my years doing it I never once came even REMOTELY close to a car. It was awesome, I had the BEST time.

Would I let my kids do it? Hellz to the No. Because I get too wound up and worried about EVERYTHING. But I used to do it. I still see people do it and I'm guessing it's because they did it growing up!

I grew up in Northport, and since there were actual hills there, we went sledding at the VA or wherever. When I married DH and moved to the south shore, I was HORRIFIED when I saw this. DH claims that there are no good hills on the south shore (he grew up in Deer Park) and this is what people have to do to go sledding. I get that, but it's still scary to see and I would NEVER allow my kids to do that.

I have never seen this. I think it would be hard for me not get out of the vehicle and yell at those parents.

Like I said.. I did it from the time I was maybe.. 5 until I was well into my teens and I never even came close to a challenge (except when I ran over my own hand with the sled). The dip and span at the end of the hill where we were is a LOOOOOT longer than it looks. And there were usually adults at the bottom ready to intercept their kid.

But.. like I said.. I'm an adult now and have a greater ability to recognize the 'what if' factors and I'm a very nervous type when it comes to 'possibilities' no matter how remote. So we don't do this with our kids.

OMG I almost posted about this the other day because it makes me SO insane!!! I actually saw after it got dark a car parked on the hill with his lights on so kids could sled in the dark!!! I don't care how many parents are at the bottom...what if a car lost control and went off the road? There is no way I would ever let my child sled there!!!
