A reminder for Ash Wednesday and all those who observe.
Today is Ash Wednesday. If you don't know what that is, here is a good explanation: Wiki
If you are Catholic and choose to observe, today is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat. The definition of fasting follows, from americancatholic.org:
Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening—depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.
Today marks the beginning of Lent, a very important time in our faith. You can choose to give something up (like cursing or sweets) OR you can choose to add something to your life (such as attending mass or performing charitable acts). It is also customary to give up meat on all Fridays in Lent and to fast again on Good Friday.
I hope you all have a great day!
ETA: I know many other Christian faiths also observe Ash Wednesday but I am not sure of the other customs around it so I focused this on the Catholic faith, since this is what I know. I actually go to get ashes at an Episcopalian church!

Re: A reminder for Ash Wednesday and all those who observe.
Thanks Tilde! I ate meat this morning. TOTALLY forgot.. and then remembered mid bite and kept chewing. I'll make up for it.
This is Noah's first year (maybe 2nd year?) attempting to give anything up for Lent!! He was torn between giving up annoying his big brother and giving up saying 'damn'. He decided that he couldn't go 40 days without annoying Robbie so he gave up the word damn. Which is good since it lands him in time out 3x a day!

LOL! I always gave up chocolate or candy. But according to my grandma, I could still have them on Sundays so I would just eat extra on Sundays to make up for it!

I gave up chocolate, soda, and cursing. The cursing part will be the hardest for me. If I slip I am putting $1 in a jar and then at the end of Lent will donate the money to charity.
No meat today and no meat on Fridays of course.

Re: A reminder for Ash Wednesday and all those who observe.
I'm going during lunch to get my ashes. Its so funny, one of my co-workers came in this morning bragging how she was in and out of the church this morning...and I'm like, don't you say your prayers? Don't you sit down and reflect what Ash Wednesday REALLY is about? Don't you think about what you're going to give up, etc etc. Its so funny, here downtown NYC its almost like a "trend"...I bet so many non-practicing Catholics went and got their ashes...

This reminds me of HS. I knew most of those who were practicing Catholics because we went to religion together, did youth league together, saw them in church.. but on Ash Wednesday half the school would show up with ashes. Once a friend of mine came in with ashes and she was Jewish. I thought it was pretty funny.
There was a time in my life when I would get annoyed by A&P Catholics.. ESPECIALLY when you go to church on Easter or Vigil and have no place to park it because 70 bajillion people decided to show up for their annual appearance..but whatever works for them. If it gives them even a moments reflection, I think that's better than nothing!

No meat today and no meat on Fridays of course.
I also gave up cursing - the $1 in a jar is such a great idea!
I can't give up sweets b/c I don't eat enough of them. Maybe I'll give up carbs as well. LOL. Then I will lose weight too.

I haven't been to mass in a while...so this is my dumb question of the day. Do we have to go to a mass to receive ashes or can we just walk in to receive ashes?

Where is that church? My parish only has masses and I'd love to get my ashes but I can't imagine bringing two kids.

I work in Jamaica. Your best bet is a church that isn't Catholic though. . .
However, if you go into the back of a catholic church - they may have a little bowl with ashes and an envelope next to it - you can actually give yourself ashes or bring them home if you want. . .
