For BTDT Mom's...what's the best thermometer?

Hi Moms...registered this weekend and forgot to put a thermometer on there. Looking to add one now - any preference between the Braun ear therm. ($60) and the American Red Cross one ($35)?

Or any other suggestions....

TIA!

I really think the vick's rectal thermometer is the best. I have 3! The ear ones are good for adults, but I find the baby's ear too small for the probe to fit.

When DD had a terrible reaction to the MMR, I took her temperature rectally and it was 105 and then 104. When i took it under her arm, it was 96. I told the Dr. and he said they don't use "skin" readings and if the rectal said 105 and 104, that she definitely had a temperature.

The ped only wants to hear the baby's rectal temp reading so you definitely need one of those. We also have a Braun Ear thermometer but the rectal thermometers are more accurate.

We have the Safety first one that has interchangeable tops. It will measure rectally, orally and underarm. But as PPs have said the PEDs only want to hear rectal temps.

We have a rectal one, but I also swear by the Exergen temporal thermometer. I find it to be accurate, and sometimes the rectal one is just too messy to face. Chat Icon

I have the Red Cross rectal one. I like it because it prevents you from putting it in too far. You can get it at BRU.

this one

we have the vicks one too and we like it. It is accurate and very small, Chloe doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

Has anyone tried the temporal artery thermometers? I just started seeing them in the stores, and they seem so easy!!

I have the exergen temporal one and I LOVE it! It is very accurate, and while for the dr. i may have to double check with a rectal one, it is a great starting point, and for a quick check.

Re: For BTDT Mom's...what's the best thermometer?

I use the rectal digital, forget the name...

DH insisted we have an ear one for when DS is sleeping so he went out and spent 50 bucks on it. We tried it on DS, ourselves, the dog (just kidding bout the dog!) and it sucked!

Needless to say...Mommy can always tell when her baby has a temp......Chat Icon

stick with a rectal

Re: For BTDT Mom's...what's the best thermometer?

Ear one stinks...I have it and get a different reading each time I use is...Even if its 2 seconds after the first reading...

Truth is I still use the one that I got from the hospital when DS was born.

I have only done rectal temps until now at 2 when DS is nearly impossible to keep still!~

Re: For BTDT Mom's...what's the best thermometer?

I got the Red cross rectal one. I like that it only has a small tip to prevent you from putting it in too far. At first taking a rectal temp is so scary. It was somewhat comforting to have the small tip as a guide.
My doctor hates the ear ones. He says that they will give two different temps in each ear. I will attest that my day care often will call me with a normal in one ear and fever in another. Then I will get home and take it rectally and it will be fine.

vicks rectal for babies..

when dh was in the nicu they did the under the arm. when he was sick and i called the ped up they tell me take his rectal temp before the dr calls back.

but get an underarm or ear one too. always good to have a back up and for when they are a little older/

This is by far my favorite as well, but I have found they vary as well. I have one for my DD and one for DS and find they vary by a degree. I've tried both on my DD and they gave me different temps when I took her temp back to back. I don't know which one is rightChat Icon

I have the braun ear thermomether and I love it. It is definitely better for when they are alittle older but it allows me to take DS temp without waking him if he is sleeping. My Ped uses the same one in his office.
