went to the dr.

I went to the doctor to tell him that I have been irregular since coming off the pill in September.

He did a sono and I have no cysts on my ovaries, everything looks good. I do not have PCOS.

He told me to wait a few more weeks to see if I get AF. If I don't call him and he will prescribe me provera to bring it on. Once I get AF, he prescribed me clomid to take to make sure I am ovualting.

I don't really want to take any drugs, especially clomid. I am afraid of multiple births. I told him my concerns and he said, this is a different type of clomid. The one where I could have multiple births, is when he would be doing egg implantation, and I am no where near that stage yet.

has anyone heard of different types of clomid?

I also mentioned that I was interested in bioidentical hormone therapy. He said he doesn't believe in it.

Any thoughts on this plan?? I love my doctor. I just don't want any more drugs in my body. Does this plan sound feasible?

I have to admit we had just started TTC but since I have irregular periods, I just wanted to know my cycle.

Should I try to temp before taking meds?? Just wait for my next period?? I am confused and ancy

im no doctor - but i am fairly certain there is no "other clomid." it sounds like what he meant wasn't that the clomid itself is different - just how he's planning on using it for you. to be honest his comments (assuming they were transcribed accurately) dont make sense to me because clomid could def make you ovulate more than one egg regardless of whether you are just BDing, doing IUI (inseminations), or IVF (egg implantation). not to mention that doctors use much different meds for egg implantation, not clomid, and you can choose the amount of eggs to implant thus actually reducing the chances of multiples comparatively to just taking clomid and BDing... first off i would say def 10000% temp. its the only way to really be sure if you are ovulating. if you aren't ovulating then you will likely need meds to stimulate that. if you are ovulating then you don't necessarily need clomid - but it could help. you def dont want to start temping til you start a new cycle.

i dont know how long you have been waiting for AF - but in my opinion "a couple of weeks" seems like a long time before he will give you provera - but obv it depends how long you have been waiting. if i were you i would get the provera asap so at least you can stat a new cycle and start temping.

as far as clomid alone goes i wouldnt be that concerned about mutiples. especially until you are sure you are ovulating. if you already ovulate on your own then yes, clomid could increase the chances of multiple eggs being released. but if you arent ovulating on your own then i would be more concerned with getting one egg than what would happen if you got multiple eggs. many doctors start clomid on such a low dose that many of us dont even respond to it - let alone ovulate multiple mature eggs. even if you do ovulate on your own clomid supposedly will make you O sooner (based on your protocol of course) and increases egg quality and helps the luteal phase as well. However, it does have some negative effects like thinning of the uterine lining, and lack of CM, so if you do go the clomid route, make sure your doctor is monitoring your progress to make sure its having positive effects on your ovulation to make it worth the negative side effects.

lastly here are some Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that you are going through this. i know all too well how frustrating i can be when your body doesnt do what you want it to. that being said if you find you dont O and you continue to be irregular - i would go see an RE (im assuming the dr. you saw was an ob/gyn). for one, an RE will closely monitor your progress so #1 you arent wasting time with meds that aren't working - you wont go through a whole clomid cycle to find out you didnt O - you would be monitored the whole time. #2 because you are so closely monitoroed you will know how many eggs you are ovulating and thus be able to know if you have any risk of multiples - since thats a major concern of yours.

an RE is specifically there to help you get pregnant - and i do feel because this is their focus, they are more likely to listen to the concerns you have about how much intervention and drug therapy vs. natural therapies. an ob/gyn does so many other things that they dont necessarily know the best options, especially if you are looking for alternative treatment plans. but if you do go the RE route be prepared for drug therapy as well since a lot of times it is the only proven option.

Re: went to the dr.

thank you so much!! you have explained some things that I wasn't sure of!

I think I might wait to get AF and then start temping before starting on clomid and see where that takes me.

So, I am ovualting when I see an increase in temp? How much on average does it go up??

So I think that will be my plan for now. I am supposed to call the Dr. next week to get the provera. I might wait to see if I get it on my own. My last period was in December (spotting).

Over the past few days, I have been starving, bloated, headaches and have had back pain. I am hoping AF is on its way!!

Thank you again for your help.

no prob!!

as far as temping goes check out fertility friend or some of the other websites. they will be a wealth of info and also provide easy free charting programs.

but yeah, you would start temping around cd1 of a new cycle. your temp will be a bit different each day but overall a pattern of temps will form, almost like an average pre-O temp. at the same time monitor your CM and keep an eye out for O signs - either physical or use OPKs if you want. until you have been doing it for a while, temping wont tell you when you are going to O it just confirms that you did O. the morning after you O you will notice a temp "spike." some people go up in small increments and others see a large jump. if your temp spikes and stays at the higher level for 3+ days you can confirm that you did in fact ovulate. after ovulation your temps will develop a new "post-O" average and stay high til you get AF. if you were to get a BFP it would stay high for the most part as well.

as with everything there are exceptions to the rules but there are tons of websites out there where you can read up on it. also if you are a book person i highly recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility - it really breaks the whole temping thing down.

good luck and heres some AF dust Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
