What is your favorite *local(ish)* charity...
and why? Do you see an urgent need? Which do you give to most often, whether you give money or clothes or housewares, time, services, etc...?
ETA - Also, is there a need, that you are not seeing filled in your area? What is it? What charity organization do you wish existed?

Toys of Hope. Because it's one of the few that I KNOW makes an impact and one of the few that uses donations toward helping others instead of 90% of funds going toward administrative funding.

Henry Viscardi School (school / center for the disabled - my mom worked there for years)
The Inn (soup kitchens / shelters / services for the homeless)
Nassau-Suffolk Coalition for the Homeless
North Shore Animal League
New York Horse Rescue
Ponytales Horse Rescue (in PA)
I also donate clothes / furniture / etc. to Big Brothers Big Sisters or to the Salvation Army.
ETA -- I think there is a very urgent need for services for the homeless and hungry on Long Island. Same would hold true for homeless animals.

Well locally I donate all of our clothing and things to a church in Brooklyn (we live in Queens, but the church takes care of the 5 boros)
Our church donations.
Our college (well it is not local as it is upstate--but to us it is local bc it is like a second home)
Other than that we do mostly national or international charities.
Thinking about this though I would like to give more locally--thanks for the reminder

I really only give locally to charities.
I donate to the Bread and More Inn in Riverhead. My parents serve there on a weekly basis and I really support what they do.
In addition, my mom and a friend founded an ESL program for migrant workers that is aimed to help them start the process to gain citizenship. They also have the Guatemalan consulate come stay with them once a year to issue passports to the Guatemalan people who have no identification in their home country, leaving them at risk of being an alien both here and there should they get deported. So I give to that program because I think it's a worthy cause.
I forget the actual name of the other organization that I donate to, but it's run by four nuns in Riverhead and I donate everything I can to them: baby clothes, diapers, our clothes, coats, gloves, food, formula, you name it. They really, really help out the community should a family need anything and I KNOW first hand from them that the things are going to people who really, truly need them.

Island Harvest, because I was a volunteer. I worked in the office, did events, and spoke on their speaker's bureau.

Mary Brennan inn.. I feed the homeless there on Mondays!! from 9am - 2pm.. I am starting again in spring.. After DD was born I had to stop for a while but I miss it so so much..

As a social worker, finding housing for the disabled is really difficult. Most landlords I run across are discriminatory and don't want to accept the subsidy for our program. I can't say I blame them sometimes though if they've been burned in the past.
I also have been advised to use the local Catholic Church/St. Vincent De Paul Society to try to get furniture for my clients when housing is located.
It doesn't always work though, because you can only go to the one covered by your local parish and not all of them have access to furniture.
Since it was asked, this is what I am finding difficult right now.

The United Cerebral Palsy take donations. They're my favorite "local" charity.
ETA: They have one in Nassau (Roosevelt) and in Suffolk.
