Re: Avg. age

It would be interesting to see the average age of women in urban areas and suburban...I'm sure there would be a big difference.

I'd say 31 for urban areas, 27 for suburban/rural

Plus I think NY would have an older age than the midwest and the south..

I believe the average in the US is 25 but I would think it's much higher in NY.

I am 30 and only 1 out of my group of 10 friends has a child and the rest are not even TTC yet. I'm the only one TTC.

Re: Avg. age

This is from the US Census:

25.1
Average age of women when they give birth for the first time. This is a U.S. record high. The average age has risen nearly four years since 1970. <http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr52/nvsr52_10.pdf>

Re: Avg. age

Well, obviously there IS an average age; it just depends on the population being sampled. For my family and friends (which are a lot and 99% of them parents), 30 seems to be the age most start. Yet, while pregnant with my 1st (at 31), it appeared that all of the members of the BabyCenter due date month chat board that I belonged to were like 23--and hardly any from NY. I do also believe that 1st time moms are several years older in NYC than in other parts of the country.

Re: Avg. age

Apparently it's 27/28 among my group of friends... I know 5 people from college who have all given birth within the last 3 weeks.

Then I know another 4 who are due in the spring.

Apparently I didn't get the memo last spring/summer :P

Re: Avg. age

I'm 32, most of my good friends from home, MD, have a 1 or 2 year old, but not all. Now up here, I only have 1 or 2 friends with children, many are not married.

Re: Avg. age

I'll be 32 when I have my first child. I'm the first among my friends to have kids. I'm the oldest among family members to have kids.

Re: Avg. age

I'm 29, and would be the first in my group of friends to have a baby (assuming no one "slips"). But I think the national average is 25-26. I know it's been rising over the past few decades.
