extending a basement

has anyone ever made their basement bigger? how much did it cost to dig down and lay the foundation? I would want it about the size of a 1 1/2 car garage...thanks

Are you asking about making an existing crawl space deeper, or about digging a brand-new basement next to the house, and connecting it to the existing basement, then putting dirt (or a deck) over the new basement?

I wonder how much your taxes will go up after doing this, because you are increasing the footing on your home. I would look into that first.

I would want to make the basement bigger.....digging out where the garage already is, connecting it to the basement that is already there, and then we would make the garage a den.

Hard to hide digging a new basement though, and sometime you have neighbors that just love to turn in anyone doing work without a permit. I know there is one in our neighborhood. And it costs extra in fines if you have to get the permit after the fact. We got screwed because our sellers had done a basement conversion and while we insisted on an updated CO, the town never did an on-site inspection so it was not on the CO even though it should have been. When we did other renovations they did the on-site and hit us up for fees and made us bring the basement up to code before we could get a CO for the dormer.
Personally, the attitude of it's OK as long as you don't get caught is one of the biggest issues I have with Long Island housing - we looked at so much crap when we were searching.

i'd call your town and find out what the process is for the type of work you are looking to do at the same time finding out about price.

if/when you sell your home and you don't have the proper paperwork...well, that's a headache i personally wouldn't want.
