Dumb Clomid ?

Is it a pill or a shot? or does it come in both forms? FSIL used clomid to concieve my niece a few years ago but I remember her having to give herself these shots in her stomach. She also had an IUI. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I'm curious b/c if this isn't our month I'm planning on going to the doc and asking for clomid (well seeing if he thinks it's a good idea) cause I think my eggs may not be maturing fully. So I want to know what I'm getting myself into!

Re: Dumb Clomid ?

clomid itself is a pill

sometimes the dr. will prescribe it with injections

i just took the pills
they only come in 50mg. so if dr. gives you 100mg. its 2 pills

What makes you think that? I know from other posts that you have long cycles, but I don't know if that necessarily means your eggs are immature. Clomid is a major perscription drug, and while it helps many women, it might not be the best option for everyone. Sometimes TTC just takes time. It doesn't mean there's anything "wrong" with you.

Well we had unprotected sex for 4 years before getting married b/c I was misdiagnosed with PCOS and was under the impression that I could not get pregnant naturally. I just recently found out that I in fact do not have PCOS. Anyway, never in that time did I have a pregnancy. So I was talking to my best friend who is a PA (physians assistant) and she said that since I do get regular periods ( they are long), and that nothing ever appeared wrong internally on a sono (I've had multiple over the years) that she has a feeling that my eggs just may not be maturing fully. She suggested seeing what the doc thought about clomid.

Re: Dumb Clomid ?

Clomid is a pill. I have PCOS and am going through my first cycle of Clomid now. I do not ovulate on my own, so this is why my doctor prescribed this. If you do not have PCOS, then you must ovulate on your own, right? If so, Clomid won't really be the right thing for you. How do you know that your eggs aren't maturing? I would ask your doctor what you can do to help you conceive, but I honestly don't think you should just jump to Clomid as your answer. HTH!

I don't have PCOS but I'm not sure if I ovulate on my own. From what I understand though you can have regular periods but still not be Oing or have PCOS. I temp but so far I've had a month where no thermal shift was detected and once where it was. I should have O'd today so I'm hoping to see a temp rise tomorrow to confirm!

Re: Dumb Clomid ?

I agree with the other ladies that I would be cautious when it comes to climid. IMO too many doctors use this as a first option and it may not always be necessary. Also, I don't know the specifics, but there is a limit (I think 12 in total over a lifetime) to the number of cycles you can take clomid b/c it can make the lining of your uterus thinner and less ideal for implantation. It can decrease the quality of your cervical mucus (which sperm need to make their way to the egg), actually making conception more difficult.

It sounds like you have only temped for two months. I know its hard, but I would temp for a few more months so that I have something more concrete to give my OB. Doing this will give you more data on if you are Oing, how long your LP is, etc. If you ARE Oing, and are having no success trying, it could be something else- a blocked tube, issues with CM, a short LP/low progesterone, or male issues.

Also, how long have you been trying with perfectly- timed sex? Some docs won't consider testing or tx until its been at leat 6 months.

Good Luck!

Re: Dumb Clomid ?

Clomid is a fertlity drug and while it's the "mildest" of them, you should be monitored closely while on it (blood work and sonos). Which most regular OBs do not do. It does not gaurantee either that you will ovulate (I speak from experience)

There is also a lifetime max you should take it for (no more than 12 cycles LIFETIME). Overuse of Clomid will cause your uterine lining to thin out which will make getting pregnant or at least sustaining a pregnancy near impossible.

Re: Dumb Clomid ?

Clomid can also be used if you ovulate on your own - which I did - and if you do, you end up taking it on different days than if you're not ovulating. My OB did all kinds of bloodwork first to see what was going on - check ovulation, prolactin, other hormones. That being said, OBs generally do not monitor Clomid the way it should be monitored so if you think you are headed down this path, save yourself some time and effort and go to an RE. I did not - but only because I got pregnant on my first round of Clomid - but knowing what I know now about Clomid, I would've turned to an expert or at least asked my OB to monitor me.

Re: Dumb Clomid ?

You have many good questions... and I'm not sure where you are getting all of your info from.

From what you have written:

1. How long have you been actively trying? By actively I mean temping, or looking at your CM, or peeing on sticks? I don't think I appreciated how timing is very delicate and unless you have been having sex every other day for all those years: I'd work out your cycle 1st. Know the different phases (days prior to ovulation, days post).

2. You should think about going to see a RE. Yup... eventually it is $$$. But the good news is the early steps are not so pricey (except for initial blood-work & HSG): Clomid is very in-expensive. IUIs run about $200. (also you have to include monitoring, blood-work, ect). You may have some time to put tax-free money into a health-spending account.

3. Clomid effects people differently. With 4 rounds, it never thinned my lining. With some people, it can thin a lining in the course of 1 cycle. You obviously should be seeing a RE and monitored.

4. Don't forget about DH: the "fault" may lie within him. You would need a sperm analysis before you start meds. If he has poor mobility/morphology... you may have a different plan all together.

Good luck!
