If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
Was he/she able to start some preliminary testing or do you automatically get referred to a specialist? If your OB was able to begin testing, what did he/she do?
I've made an appt. with my OBGYN for next Tuesday. I am going to insist on looking further into my situation (miscarriage, TTC for about a year, etc, etc.) NOW, but next Tuesday is already mid-cycle and too late for some of the testing, I believe. Anyhow, I am hoping he can get started with some of this before I need to see a specialist.
Can you share your situation with me?

Re: If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
Well, because I have thyroid issues (very underactive; Hashimoto's thyroiditis), my dr. took blood and checked all of my hormone levels. I was having VERY long cycles. They increased my thyroid meds and started me on metformin to regulate my cycles. After a few months I went on clomid and got preg. with DS right away.

Re: If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
I have my annual exam with my OB/Gyn in January and asked them to schedule some extra time to discuss TTC. There are sperm issues on DHs side so I will get a script for DH to get a SA and see if the doc will do a workup on me. I also need to see if he can do something to shorten my cycles since they're 40+ days. If we find any issues with DHs sperm or with me, I'm going right to a RE.
If I were in YOUR shoes, I'd skip the OB/Gyn and go right to an RE. REs specialize in getting women PG, while OB/Gyns do not. Since you've been TTC for a year I wouldn't waste time with the OB/Gyn.

Re: If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
i have been trying almost a year since my last mc. i went to my reg ob, we are starting clomid this month, will do this for 3 months if no results then he is sending me to a specialist. i was told that they would do the same thing first anyway and i would rather be with my ob then someone new anyway! good luck!

Re: If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
We haven't been trying that long, but because of some weird stuff happening in recent cycles, my OBGYN referred me for some progesterone tests on CD 21. Depending on your suspected issue, it might not be too late in your cycle to look into it.
Some RE's won't make an appointment with you until your OBGYN refers you, so make sure your doc calls ahead.

If your insurance allows it I would go to the RE and skip your OB.

I would NOT waste any time with an OB/GYN............go right to an RE! They are experts in fertility issues whereas an OB/GYN are not. They will do extensive testing and figure out the best course of action..........most OB's just stick you on Clomid which is not the answer for everything fertility related.

i agree. if you want testing done go straight to an RE where they will do more extensive testing than an ob/gyn.

We have been trying for over a year and nothing. Our insurance does not cover an RE. I spoke to my gyno they have been very helpful.

Re: If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
Thank you all so much! I already have the appt. with my OB on 1/5 and am due for my annual anyway, so I will discuss the situation with him. If he doesn't/won't do any testing, I will make an appt. with an RE. Luckily, this is less than a week away, so I won't be wasting too much time!

Re: If you've been having trouble conceiving and went to see your OB...
Good luck with your appointment. My OB started preliminary testing. He did bloodwork and gave me a script for an HSG and DH as Script for sperm analysis. We ended up not going for the further testing with him because my blood results were indicative of PCOS so he sent me to an RE.
