Decorating on limited budget & do you notice.....

DH and I decided we are going to do each room of our house when we have the money, instead of going all out and being in debt forever. So far we've done our room and DS room. The bathroom is in nice condition as it had been upgraded when we moved in.

We want to do the living room and kitchen next.

We have some couches, and while in decent condition, were starting to look "worn" and it bothered me. DH and I felt that instead of going out and buying new furniture, we'd just wait until we have the $$$$ to do the whole room.

I went to Target yesterday and got some slip-covers and funky pillows to put on in the meantime.

I think they look okay, but part of me wonders if people come over if they are going to think we look ghetto.Chat Icon

Is anyone in a similar boat?

My feeling is, which i told DH, Anyone that I would invite to my home, if they are a true friend or family, would not be looking with a critical eye.

You do what is best for you as a couple and as a family; remember, no one else is paying your bills :)

We are in the same boat, we can't afford to do the whole house at once, and a lot of rooms need serious upgrades. So it's little by little--our next project is to replace several doors and frames (the old ones are gross--no paint is going to help really, so I think this will improve the appearance of the house).

Our couch is pretty shabby too, but I can't see buying a new one at the moment, especially not with a 2 year old. I also bought new pillows to make it a little nicer.

Do what you can, if anyone is critical, they are not a true friend.

We to decorated over time. I look at it this way, I did not want to go into debt over it. I also wanted to find things that I loved, and not just something to fill the space. As a pp said, if your guests are critical of your house then are they really your friend? I also like to do things over time, so that in a few years the rooms don't look dated.

Honestly I think thats a good choice considering you have a small child. DS has ruined our couch from spitting up as a baby to dripping sippy cups to sticky, chocolate hands etc.

Although we could afford to go get a new sofa we are waiting because we know he's not done Chat Icon . I just use pillows to disguise the bad area.

I never think ghetto personally!

A lot of our stuff is from Ikea or target.

It looks nice enough, and we are not in a position to be upgrading anytime soon.

As a PP said, anyone that comes over can keep their comments to themselves. It would only be family, close friends anyway.

I agree. I also know slip covers are a small fortune themselves!

Thanks everyone!!! You are all right. It's just me feeling this way and probably no one else. We only have close family and friends over anyway who could probably care less.

ITA with this. We bought new LR furniture when we moved into our house and the kids have spilled, peed, puked on themChat Icon . I wish we would have kept our old stuff and just did what you are doing till the kids were older.

I think what you are doing is the greatest thing you can do. Slip covers & pillows bring a whole new world to a couch. Don't care what others think, it's your house and as long as you enjoy it.....that is all that counts.

We have Ikea & Target stuff in a lot of our house. I still think it looks nice and it suits my budget too. Chat Icon We handle one room or one project at a time. It all gets done it time. Chat Icon
