New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

When buying a new home is one of the first things you do is get new carpeting? DH and I were thinking of just getting them cleaned instead of replacing them right away. Bad move?

Re: New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

i think it depends on how they look and how old you think they are.

wen my parents moved at the time the house was only a few years old so we just cleaned the carpets. When I moved into my house the carpets were OLD! the ones upstairs were shag and the one in the living room was expensive carpeting (ugly) but also old. the bedrooms were maybe 10 yrs old but they were filty, so we removed ALL the carpeting. We didnt replace it all right away, the downstairs ad HW so we only carpeted the bedrooms and the upstairs, but def had no carpeting for a few months

IMO, I don't know what people did on carpets Chat Icon so after I painted all our rooms and got them all messed up, they were replaced.

Re: New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

We tore up the living room /dinning room carpet because we wanted the hard wood underneath.

The rest of the rooms we had professionally cleaned. We couldn't afford to have them replaced.

When we had DD a year later, we replaced the carpet in her room. We will slowly do it room by room as the need arises.

the house we are buying we plan to replace the master bedroom, den and living room carpet since those are spaces we are going to use a lot and want fresh carpets. All the carpeting is in excellent condition I just find it wierd. As for the rest of the house, we are going to have them all cleaned, and then decide, but eventually all will be replaced.

I would replace them if you financially can. THere can be so much dust and allergens in carpet. If they had a pet then definitely replace them.

Re: New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

we are buying a home that is clean.. older people that took good care of everything. we are going to steam clean three of the rugs.

one is in master, other is in the girls bedroom that they will share upstairs. the third is an ugly rug that is brown and tan shaggy-like. but, it will be their playroom so it will stay there until they are done ruining it.

so... i think it depends on the how well taken care of the house is that you are buying. it would skeeve me out if the house was yucky.

plus, these people don't have any pets where there may have been accidents...

The carpeting in the house we are closing in is in very good condition (it is very new) and we are not planning on replacing it.

Re: New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

we ripped them out. they were not in good condition and even if they had been, our seller was a smoker so they reaked of cigarette smoke. DH and I both have allergies so they absolutely had to go.

If they are your style and in good condition, I'd just get them cleaned.

We got rid of all the carpeting in our home because it was old and ugly.

Re: New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

ours were badly stained and needed to be replaced - plus the previous owners had a large dog and the smell had seeped into the padding Chat Icon otherwise i would have been fine with just cleaning them.

luckily we only had to do 2 rooms.

ETA: there was carpeting in the hallway and 3 bedrooms but DS ripped it up and refinished the hardwood floors underneath. there was also carpet in the dining room Chat Icon but we ripped that up too, there's very nice wood-look laminate flooring underneath.

Re: New Home...Do you replace all carpeting?

we replaced all of it but only because a.) it was really old and b.) my dad is retired from the carpet business and was still able to get me a great deal through his old work friends.

I see nothing wrong with steam cleaning carpets if they are decent to begin with. I have all kinds of allergies but I don't think that carpet must be replaced. My last rental apartment had wall to wall carpeting that was not brand new when I got there but it was freshly cleaned.

Thanks for the responses. I think initially we will have them steam cleaned beacuse they really are in great shape and the house is very clean. Just wasn't sure if it was a defintely NO NO! We have a baby on the way so I think we will definetly have the carpeting changed in the nursery.

TIA!
