WWYD? looking for some feedback from other Mommies re: career decision (Long)

Last week i posted that i was given the opportunity for a PT position. It seemed great in some senses, but now i have another possible opportunity and i feel torn. I'm leaning more towards one than the other (as is DH) but i'd love to throw it out there on here to hear what others might do and gain some perspective that i might be over looking.

Sorry this is so Long!

Here are the pros and cons of each option:

Job A:
- Part time position-> only work 3-4 nights every 2 weeks (which ends up being more days than that in a way if you count the day you start your shift and that it runs over until 8am the next day)
- No daycare needed.
- you like most of your coworkers but HATE the unit.
- high burnout rate in this area and others cringe when they hear the nurse:pt ratio
- more time home with your chld (your basically only away from DC while theyre asleep)
- work schedule is unpredictable (you barely ever get the schedule you request) and includes nights, weekends and holidays (would most likely work every friday night and every other saturday and/or sunday)
- again, you reallyyyyyy hate the position and have been counting down the days until you get out of there Chat Icon

Job B:
- Full time (so less time with DC)
- predicatable schedule- mon thru fri, 9-5.
- Some days you're done for the day by 1pm and can go home (so more time with DC than a typical FT position)
- independant, on your own for the day, very flexible (can make appts/run errands during lunch break, etc... )
- dont have to delegate or be responsible for people below you that dont do their jobs.
- about $35K more/year (though salary is not really a deciding factor)
- more stable patients (not receiving new admission in the middle of a code on another patient while 6 other patients are calling for you lol).
- this is a position you've wanted for a really long time
- down the line, there may be an opportunity to go PT, but probably not for at least a year, if not more.

(editted b/c there are occasional weekends/holidays, but much less than the other position).

i selected b for the simple reason of - if you have to leave your child - you should at least be HAPPY at your job.

i didn't miss my job when i was out for leave - but i was missed by them....and it's a place that i'm happy. being happy at work makes the day go faster....and if it's something you've wanted and the door has opened up - i wouldn't slam it closed!

B. Hands Down

My DH works nights, and we've done allll sorts of flipping around, days off, rotating, and it would be SO nice to just have both of us work 9-5 and pay for daycare (where DC will thrive)Chat Icon

see, i always felt like this (and still do), but i guess the part of me that's torn is b/c i wonder- is it better to just suck it up at a job i hate and sacrifice that happiness b/c it would make me happier to be home with her more?

but then, i've never really stayed at a job that i was unhappy with b/c it didnt seem like anything could make sacrificing that happiness worth it. Chat Icon

ITA with Kate. DH and I are two ships passing in the night... he works days, I work 4x12s. I would LOVE it if I could eat dinner together with him and the baby, like a normal family. And the fact that you can come home early if you like is key!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I can HEAR you say you want B but feel guilty having less hrs with the baby. We all have experienced this at the beginning. TBH, heres the reasons I chose B...
You need to do what makes YOU happy. Find a GREAT babysitter, establish a routine with the baby which is steady (9-5 is perfect...I do 8-4), and regardless of what the $$$ means or doesnt mean to you...its AWESOME to have extra chunk change to spoil your baby. Whether you leave work at 1 or 4 or even 5, you will still have the rest of the evenings and weekends to enjoy the baby. For me, I can say that 3 yrs later I enjoy my work time bc it gives me the chance to do ME things aside from just work. I get my breaks where I can do what I want. If I thought for a second you were on the fence and saying that you NEEDED to be home FT that would be one thing but I think you sound really unhappy staying on a sh!tty unit. Aside from the fact, the quality time is going to be when you are overly exhausted from the night shift. So basically if it were ME, I would do 9-5 no question about it.

B for all the reasons above.

Being burn out means less time with your child actually not more. Stress will seep into your quality time and like the others said.. happy mommy = happy baby!

It seems to me like you would be much happier. Do it for a year and then see about going to 3-4 days instead of 5 (if 5 isn't working out).

B.

For the stability of being able to plan a weekend with DD and DH. It's nice to have your weekends off.

Re: WWYD? looking for some feedback from other Mommies re: career decision (Long)

knowing your DH's schedule Chat Icon i would absolutely go for #2. it doesn't matter how good the "hours" are - the schedule for job #1 stinks (to me) and would leave me exhausted on the days i could spend with DH and DS (in your case DD).

i know it's hard to not be a SAHM but then i think of the opportunities down the road... that's what would motivate me.

good luck making your decision. Chat Icon

- this is a position you've wanted for a really long time

Of everything you wrote, this is what jumped out at me most. Even if it's P/T, if you are working nights, you will be tired when you are with Abby. I think a 9-5 schedule might give you less time with her, but it might be better quality time. And, you and DH will have family time all together, which IMO, is very important.

If you had to work nights, because daycare would be too expensive or you were against it, I might think differently, but since you have the choice, I would take Job B. i was just talking recently with a co-worker who told me she feels her kids need her more now than they did when they were babies and they are around 7 and 9. If you can go P/T later on, you might be able to schedule work around her activities (and future babies!)

Looks like everyone felt the same way that DH and I did. I wont find out for sure about job B for a couple of weeks, but i'm pretty sure that's the route i'm going to end up taking if it's mine. The thought of PT was really nice though....

I don't even think this is a hard decision............B!!! It just sounds SO much better financially, in terms of your happiness and contentment on the job, predictability of hours, being able to spend holidays and weekends with your DC. Honestly, I don't even know why you are considering job A. It seems like an obvious choice to me! Chat Icon

Definitely B. I'd give my right arm to have DH be around for dinner, bedtime, weekends, holidays, etc. Even just to have a set schedule would be nice.
