HELP - 3 week old with a cold???

My DD is 3 weeks today and is sneezing/coughing. She sounds a little congested, mostly when drinking a bottle or fussing. She doesnt have a fever but has been MUCH more fussy than usual. What can I give her/do for her?! Chat Icon

use a humidifier, raise up the mattress in the crib, you can use saline drops to clear up congestion.

aww poor sophia Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

you can use saline spray/drops and a nasal aspirator to help with the congestion. a cool mist humidifier will also help.

I would absolutely, positively take her to the doctor.....it could be very dangerous for a baby so young to have a cold especially with the coughing....

Re: HELP - 3 week old with a cold???

i think the coughing has more to do with the congestion -- shell do it if shes crying, sounds like shes trying to compesate for air bc shes a little congested

should I call even though she doesnt have a fever???

Like a pp said, use a humidifier, and elevate her when she's sleeping so it helps to alleviate the congestion/post nasal drip. I don't know that there's anything they can do for her at that age at the dr. but def keep an eye on her temp. If it goes above I think 100.3/4 at that age you have to call the ped.

DD caught her first cold at 2 weeks old. You're not alone Chat Icon

Thankfully, she's pretty much over it. I ran a cool mist humidifier over her every night and used a nasal aspirator with saline drops on her once in a while if her nose was clogged. When we were discharged from the hospital, we asked the nurse if they could give us one of their aspirators because the hospital ones work much better than the ones you buy in the store. Other than that, there wasn't much we could do for her other than to let her ride it out. Luckily, DD didn't have a fever so we didn't call the pediatrician.

However, for peace of mind you can always have your ped check your DD out! I hope you both get better soon! Chat Icon

DS had congestion two weeks ago. We called the ped and he said as long as he has no fever and no breathing problems just to use saline drops, cool mist humidifier and the aspirator. He also recommended that we warm the bottle a little warmer than usual (of course not too hot) and give it to him because his cry sounded a bit raspy. We also put the mattress on an angle.
