We bought the diamond from a wholesaler and had a jeweller make up the setting.
I *think* they have a place in NY, The Diamond Exchange.

A custom ring maker, Elsa's. I wanted a Jeff Cooper but was crazy $$$, so I down loaded the pic and got mine made to look like that design! 
How did it come out? How much cheaper was it % wise?? I love TACORI but the chances of me ever getting one are slim to none.

my husband went to a few jewelers that were recommended to him until he found the right jeweler and right diamond  i found out later on that it took him months to find my stone! i have a pear stone so it wasn't that easy for him to find one that met all the criteria he was looking for - i think if you are getting a more common stone like round or square it would be a lot easier to find.....a jeweler might have 20 round stones for you to look at vs 5 pear stones....(just an example).....
i heard that chains and dept stores charge more money - same for rings that come from name brands/designers...

Jeweler - Good Old Gold in Massapequa. It's family owned and they don't get commission so there's not pressure. I love them.
ETA: I don't trust chain stores myself... I feel like the salespeople don't know what they are talking about.

DH got it in the Diamond District, so I am not sure if that means it was from a store or a jeweler! 
same with us.
he got the matching wedding band there too. dh's wedding band is from tri - county.

We went to Tiffany's and Fortunoff to look at rings. Once I knew what I wanted, my DH got it from a private jeweler for a lot less.

Stunning! I  my rings!! I don't know about total price difference b/c one reason Jeff Cooper was off the chart is b/c he only does Pltanium. Since we were in the midst of buying a house, we went for 18K white gold, so that was a HUGE $$ saver. Her work is flawless and my set is perfection!

we looked at stores to get an idea what we liked and then DH went to a jeweler and had him make my ring to be exactly what i wanted......and that is why i love him soo much!!!!!!!

A chain jewelry store in the mall.
I just liked the style of it, I never had it appraised, I don't know about the quality of the diamonds or anything, but that wasn't really important to me, it wasn't expensive & I like it.

From a store - a west-coast based "engagement ring specialist" type store where you can get something as is, choose a diamond separately from the setting, or work with a jeweler onsite to have something made.

Wedding band..... hand me down that was cracked and messed up so DH took the two stones that were good and bought a new band.

DH went with my mom and my MIL to a jeweler in Smithtown. They used the stone from his grandmother's ring and he picked out a setting and they took the stone out of his grandmother's ring and set it in that one.

The stone came from DH's uncle (who 'gets these things' LOL) and he found the setting at an estate jeweler.
