I need to find a home for my shitzu

I need to find a home for my Shitzu. I rescued him, he is about 5 years old. He is a good dog, there are some house training issues mainly because we arent home alot. I have exhausted all my friends and family. Where should I turn next?

how about a dog walking service? Sometime shelter dogs have a tougher time house training because they are forced to use the bathroom where they sleep.

I agree with the pp who mentioned a dog walking service for when you are not home.

Don't have this poor little guy through another transistion. You rescuced him from a shelter environment don't give up on him and put him back in that environment.

I was wondering the same thing.

I'd live with piss and sh!t on the floor every single day before I'd part with my animals.
I'd rather be dead.

But that's just me I guess... Chat Icon

That's me too. That's why people need to know taking a pet (esp a shelter one) is a huge comittment.

Maybe he needs a family who is home more to dedicate more time to him? I do hope the OP can find a home for him if he isn't getting the attention he needs, b/c it would be horrific if a shelter dog that was rescued wound up in a shelter again.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have had 3 shih tzus in my life, they were not hard to train at all. Maybe think of a cage while you are gone. They are such adorable, loving pets please give him a chance.

I personally would not advocate keepign a dog in a Crate for long hours. Dogs, esp shelter dogs, need companionship and love, not to be locked up in another cage for long periods of the day, hours and hours.

Ideally dogs should not be crated for more than 4 hrs. I don't think this is a good solution based on the OPs post.

Re: I need to find a home for my shitzu

I did not say for her to crate the dog for long periods of time, not sure if she works or just needed help for afew hours. Maybe a crate in the bathroom with the door open so he can get out and walk around but is contained with his messes. Just was trying to give some advice so he does not end up back in a shelter.

Who said I was going to bring him to a shelter??? I never said that. I rescued the dog, I would never do that. I knew what I was getting into, I have another rescue. I love how some are so quick to judge without even knowing me. Yes the main reason I was looking to find him a new home is because after 3 long years of trying to train him he continues to piss and sh $ T all over my house, on my kids toys, etc... I have 3 kids, work full time and another dog who thankfully does not do that. I am at my whitts end. My husband and I have decided to invest in a trainer as a last ditch effort. We love him and we dont want to find him a new home but I cant live like this.

Best thing you wrote! I don't know why dog owners seem to be resistant to getting outside help for issues like this. If you get a good trainer and really work to help your dog resolve this issue, you can have great success! It will take time, diligence and patience but you can do it. It is not impossible, remember that. Chat Icon

I wish you luck and hope that anyone here who is reading this and knows an effective trainer will give you details.

Re: I need to find a home for my shitzu

I really hope the trainer works out.. I have a feeling you are going to have to keep him forever.. Its going to be very hard to rehome an untrained dog.. JMO.. I know I honestly would not be able to make that commitment.. The only thing I can think of is if you can get one full week off of work (not sure if you have vacation time ) and dedicate it to following up with what the trainer tells you to do.. There is no use getting a trainer if you are not home to reinforce what you are taught,, The trainer is for you really not the dog.. Also can you get a dog walker to come in when you are out all day.. I know my neighbor does it.. I think she charges $15 for a 1/2 hour.. It adds up but it may solve your problem.. Good luck to you.. Re: I need to find a home for my shitzu

I'm not a fan of cages. We have two shi tzus. The younger guy we confine to a room mainly because he is very hyper and every now and then bothers our senior pup when we are around. For his safety we separate them when we are not home. The lil guy is placed in a bedroom with the door open and a safety gate attached to the door frame. Eventually he will be moved to the kitchen b/c his room will become DS's nursery.

If you don't have a room to put him in why not get those gates that confine children to a specific area. You can use the same for the dog.

We've learned through trial and error with the lil guy to avoid accidents, although on rare days he has them. We walk them in the am then put them both in the backyard about 20 minutes before we leave for the day. The lil guy is not fed in the am. He gets fed a big meal as soon as one of us gets home and then another meal an hour or so later. We keep a water bowl in his room. Even though he does drink water throughout the day he doesn't go in the room nearly as much as when he would eat in the am.

I hope this helps. I know it's frustrating. Especially after a long day to deal with accidents. But it does get better. Chat Icon

Consider yourself lucky then because not all dogs are easy to train. I have tried many differnt things/techniques. I think what sometimes people dont understand is there are some dogs that just dont get it or for some reason dont want to get trained. Anyway, just a vent because I am really getting sick of people assuming I havent tried to train him or "given him a chance". I have had the dog for almost 4 years.

Re: I need to find a home for my shitzu

any dog can be trained. it's that simple. where are you trying to get the dog trained? maybe you aren't going to a good trainer (aka petco, petsmart, etc) . maybe a different trainer would be the best option. also be consistent with it. shih tzus are naturally lazy dogs so they're they're not as quick to learn but 4 years is crazy for him to not get it. definitely try crate training him. that's the best way to get them potty trained!! you won't regret it!
