i think its just generic 'italian' food. obviously a chain italian place in NY seems just silly cause we have so many genuine places.
but its funny cause try getting a table on a sat. nite at olive garden -- and you'll be lucky if you wait less than 60-75 min. so there is definitely a huge market for it.

I rarely go there. Maybe once a year. And it's always just for the salad and breadsticks.
Yeah, it's always packed though when I drive past. I don't understand why.

Ok, here's my analogy-
Olive Garden is to Italian food what McDonald's is to a Steak house.
Yeah, you can get burgers at McDonalds, but they don't compare to a good burger from a steak house, ya know?

Many (I will speak for everyone I know of Italian descent, first generation, brought up by off the boat ITalians)
RARELY ALMOST NEVER
go to Olive Garden.
So it depends on who you ask.
I would NEVER consider it an ITalian restaurant. EVER.

definitely -- at MG you can sit at your tables for HOURS and still have a happy server! if you call the manager the next day about your visit, they really like that too.

exactly.... my husband is first-generation Italian and he cringes at the very mention of the words Olive Garden. He will not set foot in the place... ever!
i am first generation Irish and would have considered it an Italian-American restaurant before I met DH... now I won't even go there. lol.... I have learned!!! ;) But seriously, There are too many good, authentic Italian restaurants around here to bother going there. Also, what DH cooks at home is far better than one would find at many "Italian" restaurants, let alone the Olive Garden.

And I really dislike Olive Garden. In fact, I wanted to go there once for their soup, salad, breadstick deal and BLECH. I wish I liked it. But with so many really good Italian restaurants in this area, its a shame to go there, IMO.
