Drinking while TTC

It seems as if so many websites out there are VERY conservative and strict about not drinking while TTC.

My doctor, on the otherhand, said other than taking prenatals, no life-style changes are necessary until I geta BFP. (drinking during the 2ww is ok too, according to her)

While I ultimately trust my dr., I'd be interested in hearing what other lady's doctors have said about this.

I'm trying to find balance between preparing to get pregnant, but not driving myself and DH crazy with a million rules and lifestyle changes.

I don't really drink much, but I don't have a problem having a beer or glass of wine here and there while TTC. I never asked my doc about this, though!

Re: Drinking while TTC

My doctor pretty much said the same thing your doctor said. As long as everything is in moderation you should be fine.

Re: Drinking while TTC

I haven't spoken to my dr about it yet, but unless he tells me otherwise, I just plan on going about my regular lifestyle until I get a BFP. I am not a heavy drinker AT ALL and normally I don't drink more than a glass of wine and I don't even do that too often.

However.... if I was a heavier drinker, I would definitely cut down while TTC.

I live my life as I did. I drink...I mean not every day of course, but weekends, when we go to dinner I drink Wine, etc..

When the time comes, of course that will end.

Re: Drinking while TTC

I never asked my doctor about it. I personally don't believe that drinking affects the baby that early tho. There's too many ladies out there who had no idea they were pregnant until later and even while drinking and partying during that early stage their babies have been very healthy.

However, I just can't bring myself to do it. Me & Dh aren't big party people anyhow, so it's not like it's hard for me to cut back. During this 2WW I've been trying to not drink any alcohol at all and have also been limiting my soda intake. But that's just a personal choice.... just in case Chat Icon

I agree that it's okay to imbibe moderately while TTC. When I thought I was on my 2WW (most likely didn't O), I did drink a little while out to dinner and such, but not a large amount. I won't be doing any binge-drinking, lol, but I definitely won't turn down a glass of wine until I get my BFP.

Re: Drinking while TTC

My Dr (when I was TTc with DS) just told me to take prenatals and go about life. This time around, my midwife told me to stop drinking alcohol and coffee- I didn't listen. There was no way I was going to stop living my life and it's a good thing I didn't listen- it took me 10 months to get pregnant. I would have been doubly upset and resentful if I had stopped doing normal things for all that time.

Considering you don't share a blood supply with the baby until you're 5-6 weeks along, AND considering that during the 2WW if you do get pregnant, the baby doesn't attach to anything until towards the end of the 2nd week, I would continue to live my life as usual. Like others have said, I wouldn't go binge drinking and I would try to start cutting down on some of the "negative" things (like caffeine, drinking, smoking, etc) so that it's not AS hard once you do get a BFP.

Re: Drinking while TTC

I just saw my dr last week and asked the same question - she said that there was no need to change your lifestyle in any way until you get a BFP. She said don't go overboard with drinking (but that's due to keeping general good health/well being).
She said there is no evidence that drinking hurts/helps your chances of conceiving either.

I say you do whatever you're comfortable with. A few glasses of wine isn't going to hurt anything, but maybe stay away from doing keg stands! Chat Icon
