Genetics Dr
Before DH and and I start TTC, I want to go to a genetics doctor.. For any of you that went, did you have to pay out of pocket or did your insurance cover it? and if it's out of pocket, how much, if you don't mind telling me.. Thanks!!

Re: Genetics Dr
I used Schneider's Children Hospital's Genetic Division. They were great. We actually met with them three times. I used the genetic counselor Dr. Peter (can't remember his last name) and Dr. Fox who is the MD. My insurance covered it.

My OBGYN gave me the number to one I THINK in Mineola/Garden City, I am going to call them on Monday, but if they don't take my insurance, I will FM you for your DR's info..

Re: Genetics Dr
Probably a dumb question, but what are some reasons a person goes to a Genetics DR?
What type of info do they provide? TIA

i went for genetic screening cause i am (and DH is 50%) eastern european jewish. apparantly easter european jews carry several terrible genetic diseases, and the carrier rate is higher for us than for other religion/race/nationalities. so my OB/GYN gave me the reference to schneider's genetic counselor in manhasset and i got a very large amount of blood drawn. i came back negative as a carrier for everyhting so DH does not have to get tested, which is great for me cause hes not so good with needles. so basically they test you for a bunch of stuff and if you come back positive as a carrier then your DH would have to get tested. if i remember correctly, in the rare situation that you are both carriers for the same genetic disease/mutation, it would be important for your unborn child to get tested cause of the diseases are pretty horrifying. but even if you are both carriers i think the chance of the kid (dont quote me on the # cause it was 2 months ago that i read the paperwork) being born with the disease is still only 25% or so. its more precautionary than anything else.
ETA - my insurance covered everything. it was a specialist copay for me. i think you need to get the RX from your ob/gyn in order to be covered for the testing.

Re: Genetics Dr
My RE did them.
My husband & I are from pretty different backgrounds & I don't have anything that myself or a family member could pass down that's big (like CF)...
For me, they picked a series of tests for caucasian race...they were all covered by insurance. I never thought about it, but the knowledge couldn't hurt (though the blood draws always do).
