newbie & question (maybe a little long)

hello, girls! this is my first post Chat Icon thanks in advance for all the great info i'm sure i'll get here.

so tracking ovulation is sort of making my head spin. i went to the doctor on 7/15 and he told me basically that DH should hold off on days 10, 11, 12 & 13 of my cycle to build up sperm count. then on days 14, 15, and 16 we should do the BD (see, workin that lingo already) 4 times during different times of the day.

then i started reading online and all the websites say that ovulation happens on day 14, and that it's important to BD before that so the sperm can mature and be ready to fertilize on the O day (day 14, right?).

today is either day 13 or 14 (light spotting late at night on fri 7/24 and then AF hit fully on sat 7/25). my temperature did spike by .4 degrees this morning after dropping steadily for several days prior, but i also slept with a heavy blanket and woke up feeling a little hot and sweaty, so i don't know if it's a false indicator.

I'm really surprised your doctor told you that you ovulate on day 14 since ovulation day can vary greatly from woman to woman and has a lot to do with your normal cycle length and luteal phase! You can very easily have a "normal" 28 day cycle, but have a shorter luteal phase and thereby ovulate on day 16 or 17 etc etc.

A .4 degree increase in temperature could indicate that you ovulated yesterday - except since you used a heavy blanket etc, the temp might have been skewed.

Have you been keeping track of your CM? Have you had any EWCM this week?

My doctor suggested that we BD every other day from when my period ends and said that would be a good way to TTC without driving myself crazy. I'm not sure that we'll actually be able to BD everyother day when we do TTC because of our schedules and well, because that can get tiring! lol

I would definitely BD today if I were you and for the next few days just in case. GOOD LUCK!!!

WOW!!!!! 4 times a day? You probably mean 4 times total!

Sure as heck I've never heard that.

Most ppl tell me every 2 days or every other day & start shortly before you ovulate (which for me is NOT CD 14...it's much later: and you should figure this out for yourself as a 1st step by one of various methods like EWCM or temp or Ovulation kits).

yes, he said 4 times over the course of the 3 days, varying the time of day. i did check my CM, and it seems to be right consistency, but this is our first month trying. i am also spotting lightly, which typically happens for me mid-cycle. i heard that's a sign of estrogen levels dipping and fertility.

this is the first month and it's already making my head hurt a little.

my doctor did my annual exam that day and checked my CM. based on what he saw, he estimated that i was on day 19, asked about my last period, and said i probably ovulate on day 14. i have no idea what he bases that on. that's why the conflicting information from him and other sources is a little overwhelming.

Re: newbie & question (maybe a little long)

Day 14 is the average cycle.

First, you need to fugure out how long your cycles are.

Then, I would recommend using an OPK and start testing around CD 10.

Personally, I went thru this already with baby #1 so I kind of know my cycles. I also know that I get O pain when I O. I use th OPKs to figure out when O is coming and then the pain tells me when it's happening. I O around CD 16-17. And I am pretty consistant now.

With baby #1 my cycles were varying in length, so I needed to temp. You should probably do that until you can figure out what days you are Oing on.

I also read that it's actually better to BD every other day because it builds sperm count. If you take a break those 5-6 days prior to BDing, I read that those sperm are slower because they've just been hanging out doing nothing. Not sure how true that is.
