Lead testing question

DS is going for his one year appointment a few days after his 1st birthday and I just had a few questions about this lead test that everyone is gearing me up for.

Has anyone had their child's levels come back high?

Did anyone NOT do the test?

My pedi doesn't do the finger prick - they draw it from the vein. I'm not sure I really want him prodded if he doesn't have to. We've never lived anywhere that hasn't been built before 1984 and we don't own any "painted" toys..

TIA!

Re: Lead testing question

My DS did not. But I've seen lead poisioned kids in my line of work, and I would get the test even if it from a veinChat Icon

Re: Lead testing question

There can also be lead in soil and in pipes that leach it into water you drink. I would get the lead test.

No one wants to see their child scream from the needle in their tiny veins, but it's really for their own good.

Re: Lead testing question

We had it done and it came back fine, they also drew it from his vein---he cried after the needle, but was fine within seconds!! Chat Icon

Re: Lead testing question

They did the lead test when I took for him 1 yr. old blood work up and the dr. ordered a 2nd lead test with his 2 yr. old blood work up.

Considering it is only a blood test, I would do it. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Lead testing question

The one-year bloodwork is for a lot more than just lead so I would not skip it.

My ped even said that lead issues are very rare, but things like anemia are also tested for.

DS had this test at 12 months from a vein also. He was fine, but I would absolutely get the test done. They also usually look for anemia and some other disorders that might not be so apparent, so eventhough DC may not like the test, IMO everyone should do it.

DS was fine with it actually, didn't cry at all. The woman who drew the blood was amazing with him, and he seemed to like looking at the tubes and stuff. Going in I thought every child freaked out, but they don't all get so upset with it, so it may be fine.

Not to sound naive Chat Icon , but if a childs lead level comes back high, is there anything that can be done about it ???

I still haven't gotten my DS's done - although I'm not overly concerned about lead, I do know they test for others and I'm prolonging the ineviable I guess....

I had asked on a post a while back and don't think anyone knew , figured I'd throw it out to a new crowdChat Icon
