Pets and Babies
I'm not sure if I should be posting this on parenting or not but...
Does anyone have a dog and is expecting? What do you do for the dog to be ready for baby? I have a shih tzu who has been our baby for 4 years and I have a feeling that she will get jealous and perhaps nasty when baby arrives. I have 9 months, but I want to start preparing her.
TIA

Re: Pets and Babies
I'm in the same position. We have a 7 year old lab mix who we adopted when he was 3 months old, and he has been our baby. We love him to pieces and he was one of the first things I thought of when I found out I was pg.
We've seen our dog with our friend's baby, and he just adores her. He can't stop licking her! And he's not a licky dog. BUT, just in case, we're going to hire a trainer. I think I would feel safest that way.

Re: Pets and Babies
DH and I were talking about this, this morning. DH said that when it's a few months away and we set up the nursury...we will get a baby doll and pretend. To get the dog used to not being the center of attention all the time and to learn to understand what it will be like. I hope it works.

Re: Pets and Babies
I used a baby doll & carried it around w/ me while pg to get Rudy used to what it's going to be like. When DH came home after the baby was born, he brought a blanket w/ her scent to get Rudy used to that as well. He has been awesome w/ the baby, a bit jealous/sad at times that he no longer gets all the attention, but he LOVES her!

Re: Pets and Babies
We had two dogs when I was pg and Emily was born -- a 13 year old mix and an 11 year old german shephard. Both took to her very well. Sasha, the shephard, just loves to lick her all up.
My sister has a 4 year old siberian huskey and just brought her baby home on monday and she is doing well with it also.

Re: Pets and Babies
Thank you so much ladies. I feel much better now.
Emma is very small (10 lbs.) and she tends to be very snippy....and very protective of me and DH. The last thing I want is for her to hurt the baby or for us to make her feel unwelcome

Re: Pets and Babies
My dog likes to hang out in the guest bedroom, which will become the nursery. Instead of banning her from that room, I will bring one of her dog beds in there so she can get used to all of the new stuff and scents. When I give birth I will have DH bring home one of the baby's blankets so my dog can smell it. And I also read somewhere that when you come home after giving birth that you should come into the house by yourself and give the dog some loving before the baby is brought in.
edited for poor grammer.

We are doing this as well. I am letting her smell all the new stuff and I will have DH bring home a baby blanket when our is born.

Re: Pets and Babies
We too have a shih tzu and he is spoiled rotten - but we test him out alot, I would give a bone to him, take it out of his mouth while petting him and I have been doing this forever. He is so gentle, he has been around young kids too and loves to play with them. I have no worries with the shih tzu - I will definately be careful though. We worry about our satanic cat - she is agressive and not declawed. She is soooo jealous and attacks people - family, when they sleep over.

We have a satanic cat also..who hates our dog. and the dog thinks she is a toy becuase now she is a game to the dog. But The cat will grab me when I walk by her without petting her. Iam worried how she will be when we have a baby. And our 95lb shepard is the baby of the house and very protective of me and DH also. He is great with other dogs and elderly people but not sure how well he will handle a child around and not getting all of our attention.

Re: Pets and Babies
The only people Emmie likes are me, DH and all old people
She has been around kids and is very nervous and she makes me hold her until they go away.
