Took miki to the ENT doctor today (UPDATED wtih question)

She needs tubes put in her ears and her adenoids removed. Surgery is scheduled for 6/26.....for anyone who has this done, please tell me EVERYTHING about the surgery, them coming out of anesthesia, the recovery, etc

I am flipping out over the idea of her being put under Chat Icon Chat Icon

UPDATE - so I have a silly question. I want to take miki to build a bear and get her a bear with scrubs. Will they let her have that with her in the operating room or should I just bring it to her once I go into recovery? Thanks

I don't have experience with tubes, but Nicholas had his T&A removed. Recovery was rough, but I think that was more because of the tonsils.

She will be fine Chat Icon Go to Build a Bear and get the little scrubs set they have and let her take the bear with her. Chat Icon

Re: Took miki to the ENT doctor today

My one nephew (on dhs side) just got his tubes done for 3rd time and fell out again and has to go back for a 4 time. Sil said the adenoids was alot easier than the tubes.

My other nephew (on my side) had his adenoids only removed (no tubes) and he was fine and back to himself an hour later. He just had to eat soft stuff.

Re: Took miki to the ENT doctor today

I personally don't have experience with DS, but, my 2 nephews both just had this done recently.
From my brother and SILs son it was just the tubes. My brother said they gave my nephew juice, it made him "groggy" then the mask helped put him "out".
The whole procedure took about 15-20 mins.
My other nephew had it done, both tubes and adenoids. Im not 100% sure about the anesthesia, but, all went very well and again, another quick procedure.
Both kids are doing GREAT!
They were up and playing a few hours after!

Totally different situation here, but, i'll post it anyway..DS had an MRI on Monday. He was put under with an IV. He was back to himself by the time we got home.

Best of Luck! All will be fine! Chat Icon Chat Icon

poor Miki! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had it done when I was 12 (a big difference), but it was a definite improvement after I had it done, so I can only hope the same for her.

NO milk after suregery! People always say to give lots of ice cream to sooth the throat, but milk is the worst - it creates phlegm and could make her cough. Lots of ices and sherbet.

Re: Took miki to the ENT doctor today

Aww, poor Miki, she will be okay though. I had them when I was little (2nd grade) and let me tell you what I could hear afterwards was amazing, i can still remember vividly how much better it was. So think of the positive outcome!!

Can I ask you what criteria brought the ENT to the conclusion of tubes. I had one Ped say that DS needs them, and another say to wait. He is Mr. ear infection 24/7...what led you to take Miki?

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon She will do great! I know how nervous you are about the surgery...I just went through a surgery with DS and I thought I was going to lose my mind.

If you dont mind me asking, what kind of testing did they do for the adenoids? My next step with DS is the ENT...the ped. think he may need his removed as well. I just dont want to put him through antoher surgery and more trauma right now Chat Icon

Re: Took miki to the ENT doctor today

i posted the other day, but i had the tubes twice when i was little.. i definitely still remember how much BETTER i could hear afterwards!! it made a huge difference!!
i like the idea of having her make the bear with the scrubs.. .my parents gave me a cookie monster doll for the sugery, and i still remember it.
as far as the anesthesia, i remember being a little groggy afterwards, but not sick or anything.. she'll be fine, and it will make such a difference for her!! ( i'm also a speech therapist so i know how important good hearing is!)

Re: Took miki to the ENT doctor today

My sister and I had T&A done a long time ago(12 years apart). She came home and ate Oreo cookies and was fine. I came home and couldn't talk for a few days. Everyone is different, but be prepared for all variations of healing. I was older than your DD so I was able to write what I wanted down. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

she has had 8 ear infections in the past year and the past 2 did not respond to antibiotics right away (she had to go back for different antibiotics)

My ped suggested she go to see the ENT. when he looked in her ears, both ear drums were retracted, swollen and had fluid in them

Awww poor MikiChat Icon No experience here with tonsils & adenoids or tubes, but plenty of surgeries. Ethan made it through like a champ. Worst part was getting in the IV (well, and the recovery time). I'm sure Miki will make it through wonderfully. Sending lots of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Took miki to the ENT doctor today

We had tubes put in for DS last month. I was so worried before hand and even delayed it hoping that the ear infections would get better as the weather got warmer. I think back now and I feel bad that I waited so long cause I think I tortured DS. My breaking point was when DS got a 104.5 fever and his 8th ear infection.

So the process was much easier than I ever thought. We live in NJ and they based DS sugery on his age for the time of the day (due to the fact that they need to be fasting). DS was 13 mths so he was first. We got to the hospital at 6am and we got DS changed into his hospital gown. We had to wait til 7:15 for them to take him down. He was playing until then.

They took him downstairs to surgery. DH and I both went with him. They let one parent go into surgery while they put him under. I went in with him and he went under in less then 2 minutes.

We went to the wiating room and in 15 minutes his surgeon came in to get us! Really - DS went under at 7:37 and he was done by 7:50 (we watched on the screen to see when everything started and ended).

When we went to recovery (a few minutes later), DS was already awake and crying. This was probably the hardest part. It took me some time to soothe him. They gave me a glucose bottle to give him. We were back upstairs by 8:15. They would not release us until DS had a wet diaper. We left by 9:30 but I can tell you 5 minutes after we came upsatirs, DS was running around the pediatrics ward flirting with the nurses and playing with toys.

We had to put drops in his ear for 3 days (pure torture)!

By the way, 2 of my neices had tubes and they needed to get their adnoids removed. My SIL said the surgery took a few minutes more but the results were the same - that it was pretty simple.

If we have another child and they have the same issues, I won't hesitate to do the surgery. DS is so much happier and NO EAR INFECTIONS for a full mth! By the way, we had the T tubes put in - the ones that don't fall out because DS is so young. We did not want him to have the surgery twice. We will have to take him in to get them removed when he is 3.

I hope this helps - FM if you need more info.
