Question about shower gifts!
DH's friend is expecting a baby in July. We are going to the shower in two weeks. Their registry is missing a lot of the things I couldn't live without as a new mom... I was thinking of getting one of these "necessities" instead of something on the registry. The registry has a lot of the "cutesy" stuff that never gets used.
As an expecting mom, how would you feel about this?

i think you'll get a LOT of answers on this....
my personal thoughts...i registered for things because i thought that's what i needed. YES - i appreciate gifts 'off' the registry - but without explanation....i may not 'get it'....and would simply return things...
on the FLIP side....if a friend of mine gave me a 'note' or card with each 'non registry' item explaining why it was purchased and how it was used in a practical way....that - i'd likely keep FOREVER (even the notes)...because advice is something i CHERISH & as a first time mom - i take all things people say to heart...

Hmm..that's a tough one.
I personally would probably try to think of how it would be practical and keep it. Others will get annoyed that you bought "off" the registry.
Is this friend someone you are close to that you can talk to about your intentions?

get it!You don't have to shop on the registry. If she hates, she'll return it. But, honestly I got a bunch of non-registry stuff. Some I returned.. some I thought were awesome and kept.

maybe they're not on the registry because either someone else is already purchasing them for her, or maybe she received them as hand-me-downs?
either way, as the gift-giver, you have to right to gift whatever you'd like!
so sweet of you to think of this

Get what you want! Even though I have my registries as a guideline for what I want/think I need. But I appreciate the gifts from personal experience.

I'd stick with the registry or get her a gift card and write down some suggestions for things you didn't see on her registry. Then she can choose to use it for that or something that she thinks she needs.

a friend of mine does this every shower she goes too (she does grab like sippy cups and little other things from off the registry) but I love that she does that, I hope she does it for me too! They are random things that she found helpful along the way!
(she did it for my bridal shower too.....instead of getting something off my registry she got me a victoria secret GC, under water camera, a disposable video camera, like a little honeymoon survival kit)
ETA: I think it also puts more thought into peoples gifts. but that's just me.

I would shop from the registry. My thought is, if its not on the registry there's probably a reason -- like she received things as hand-me-downs, or her and her DH already purchased the items.

Personally I just went thru this for my friend's shower. They registered for a lot of TOYS!
So I bought her 1 thing off the registry, a GC to BRU and a basket of things I knew you couldn't have too much of - onesies, pacifiers, bibs, burp clothes, receiving blankets, socks, diapers and wipes. I also got her a bunch of Mets gear in various sizing.

If there's something you really want her to have, I would just enclose a note like "this was a lifesaver for me when I had DC. I hope it comes in as handy for you." or something like that.

Get what you want, just give the gift receipt. Sometimes theres a reason why things you know you couldnt live without are not on their registry and sometimes there just things they would have never thought.

I agree--my mom bought me many of the essentials when she saw them on sale, so I do not have them on my registry, but that doesn't mean that I need them.
I'd stick to the registry.

I personally wouldn't care if someone went and got me gifts not on the registry but I tend to personally think that the stuff that they put on the registry they really want it so I might stick to the registry.

Lauren - I have done exactly what you are describing. How about getting something small off the registry as well as the item(s) that you are thinking of getting as well. Like PP's have said, just include a note saying as a new mom, you found xyz item to be so helpful and you hope it helps them as much as it helped you.

While I'm in agreement that the registry is indeed a guide, I usually do stick to it though, but may throw in something little that I felt they might like or need that wasn't on there, but always made sure to include a gift receipt.
I received *a lot* of hand-me downs as well as things our family purchased before our shower for us, so we didn't register for those things. I also did forget to put more like the little things on the registry though, and some
guests did purchase for us, and others I needed to go back and buy.

Thanks for the opinions everyone!!
It did actually cross my mind about the hand-me-downs... I know we got a lot of things from friends and family, so it ocurred to me that it could be the same thing here.
I will of course include a gift reciept with whatever I wind up getting!!! (esp. cause the registry is at BRU! )

id try and split- half registry- half non- if possible....
people suprised me and stayed on my registry- but then i was missing certain things like swaddle blankets, socks, pants, sleepers that i thought people would have picked up.

I would welcome gifts from a BTDT mom! For example, at my shower I got a little laundry bag for baby socks and little items because my friend said she couldn't live without this bag so she didn't lose any socks in the dryer and etc... Also, another friend got me an adorable picture frame and a gift certificate to Kiddie Kandids! I loved that gift.
